Diplomat Advocates Internal Overthrow as Conflict Intensifies
Israel's ambassador to the United States declared on Sunday that the ultimate solution to the ongoing conflict with Iran lies with the Iranian people themselves, who he argued must rise up to overthrow their government. Michael Leiter made the comments during a televised interview as military exchanges between the two nations entered a new phase of escalation.
"Iranian Boots on the Ground"
"We require forces on the ground, but those forces must be Iranian," Leiter stated, expressing confidence that domestic opposition to the regime is growing. He emphasized that the broader confrontation, which involves the United States as Israel's primary ally, cannot conclude while Tehran maintains its current posture. "This will only end when there is no entity in Tehran threatening the region," he asserted.
The ambassador acknowledged that a voluntary change in the regime's behavior was unlikely. Instead, he pointed to the potential for a popular uprising, referencing the government's harsh suppression of protests earlier this year. According to data from the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), security forces killed at least 6,488 demonstrators in the first fifty days of those winter protests, including hundreds of children and non-protesting civilians.
Military Escalation and Civilian Toll
The diplomatic rhetoric follows a significant military escalation over the weekend. Israeli forces struck a nuclear enrichment facility at Natanz, prompting Iranian retaliation with missile launches targeting the Israeli cities of Arad and Dimona, which are situated near Israel's primary nuclear site. The Israeli Ministry of Health reported 180 casualties from the strikes, with eight individuals in serious condition.
In response, Leiter vowed an unwavering military campaign. "We will continue until we bring this regime to its knees," he said. "We can no longer coexist with a malign state that declares its intent to destroy us and now fires ballistic missiles at its neighbors." The conflict, which began with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on February 28, has resulted in substantial civilian casualties. HRANA figures indicate at least 1,406 Iranian civilians have been killed, including 210 children, as of Saturday.
The ambassador's call for internal regime change comes amid other shifts in Iran's political landscape, including the emergence of new figures in leadership circles. Meanwhile, the U.S. military posture continues to evolve, with a recent Marine deployment to the Strait of Hormuz raising concerns about the potential for a broader ground conflict.
The situation remains volatile, with U.S. policy appearing to fluctuate between aggression and pause. This was seen recently when the White House ordered a brief halt to planned strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure. Some U.S. lawmakers have advocated for even more direct action, such as seizing Iranian oil terminals, drawing historical parallels to justify the move.
Leiter's comments underscore a strategic pivot: while external military pressure continues, the long-term goal is fostering internal collapse. This approach places the onus for political transformation directly on the Iranian populace, even as the external conflict inflicts a mounting humanitarian cost.
