Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) forcefully rejected former President Donald Trump’s unsubstantiated allegations that China interfered in the 2020 presidential election, labeling the claims “so completely false” and accusing Trump of systematically working to erode public faith in American democracy.

In an interview on MS Now shortly after Trump delivered a prime-time address from the White House, Warner, the vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, pointed to the glaring absence of evidence. He questioned why intelligence officials—many of whom were Trump’s own appointees—failed to uncover any solid proof of the alleged scheme if it had actually occurred.

Ex-Trump Lawyer Cobb Likens President to '2-Year-Old' Over Election Denial
Former Trump White House lawyer Ty Cobb compared the president to a toddler, dismissing election fraud claims as refusal to accept 2020 loss. Cobb cited no evidence of widespread fraud and noted pressure on mail voting.

“Why didn’t they find any of these so-called allegations?” Warner asked, noting the irony that Trump’s picks, including CIA Director John Ratcliffe, were running the intelligence community at the time.

During his 20-minute speech, Trump made sweeping, unsubstantiated claims that China had carried out what he described as one of the largest breaches of election data. He said declassified documents posted on a new White House website would show Beijing obtained hundreds of millions of voter files. China has since denied any meddling in the 2020 race, which Trump lost to President Joe Biden.

“As an American, I’m embarrassed,” Warner told host Jen Psaki. “I’m embarrassed that the President of the United States tried to speak to the whole nation with a whole series of falsehoods, accusations, I believe, aimed at trying to undermine confidence in our system.”

The Virginia Democrat also highlighted a key fact that undercuts Trump’s narrative: voter registration records are legally available for purchase in many states. “You know what? You can buy these voter files. There’s no need to hack,” Warner said. “I buy the Virginia voter files on a regular basis. If you are gonna be a statewide candidate, they are open to any entity.”

He called the association of legally obtained data with manipulation “so completely false,” and accused Trump of laying groundwork to challenge future elections. Warner urged his Republican colleagues to “speak up and tell the truth” if they have any dignity left.

“This guy will not win a free and fair election, so he will do anything to intervene, to corrupt our elections,” Warner added.

Other Democrats have also pushed back forcefully. Sen. Ed Markey has called for impeachment proceedings following Trump’s unsubstantiated fraud claims, while Sen. Jon Ossoff warned that Trump’s speech signals a broader attack on midterm elections and voting rights. Beijing has rejected Trump’s allegations as fabricated, further isolating the former president’s narrative.

Warner’s sharp rebuttal underscores the deepening partisan divide over election integrity, as Trump continues to challenge the legitimacy of the 2020 outcome and lays the groundwork for potential challenges in future races.
