Sir Ian McKellen, the veteran British actor known for playing Magneto in the X-Men franchise, revealed over the weekend that he used President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort as a mental trigger to amp up the anger in a destruction scene for the upcoming Marvel film Avengers: Doomsday.

In an interview with The Guardian, McKellen explained that directors Anthony and Joel Russo asked him to look more furious while filming a sequence where his character lays waste to New Jersey. 'So I stood there and I shouted: Mar-a-Lago!' McKellen said.

Trump’s Mixed Primary Night: Georgia Defeat, Alabama and Oklahoma Wins
President Trump faced a mixed bag in Tuesday primaries: his pick lost the Georgia governor runoff, but his endorsed candidates won Senate races in Alabama and Oklahoma.

The actor had previously shared a similar anecdote on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in February. During that appearance, he recounted the moment the directors instructed him to 'look more furious' while pretending to destroy the state. 'I'm standing up, pretending to destroy New Jersey, and the wind is blowing in my hair, and I'm putting on a fierce look, and I'm trying to be magnetic,' McKellen told Colbert. After being told to shout 'the worst thing you could possibly think of,' he bellowed the name of Trump's Palm Beach resort.

McKellen, 85, quipped on Colbert's show: 'Will I be allowed back in the country?' Colbert, a frequent Trump critic, replied, 'Will you be allowed back in the country? No guarantees. I don't think I'm the right person to ask for that.'

The Shakespearean-trained actor has a long history of publicly opposing Trump. In 2017, McKellen criticized the White House for failing to recognize Pride Month and for rolling back the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Executive Order, which protected LGBTQ employees from discrimination. 'It's appalling and quite unnecessary and very un-American. The gay rights movement began in America. It began in San Francisco, it began in Stonewall, the city where Donald Trump was born and thrived,' he told Variety at the time.

McKellen's latest comments come amid ongoing political tensions. In related news, the Justice Department's response to hate crimes has been tested by recent incidents, such as the Loomer's FBI demand after a mosque shooting. Meanwhile, security concerns have been heightened by events like the Texas man indicted for a shooting near the vice president's motorcade.

McKellen's use of Mar-a-Lago as a symbol of fury underscores how deeply Trump's presidency has permeated popular culture. The Lord of the Rings star has never shied away from political commentary, and his latest revelation is likely to resonate with audiences who view the resort as a political lightning rod.

Avengers: Doomsday is expected to bring together a sprawling cast of Marvel characters, including McKellen's Magneto, as the Russo brothers helm what is anticipated to be a blockbuster event. The film's release date has not yet been announced.
