American Airlines confirmed Wednesday that it is suspending six North American routes, attributing the move to soaring jet fuel costs fueled by the ongoing conflict in Iran. The decision, which affects four flights out of Los Angeles International Airport and two from Charlotte Douglas International in North Carolina, underscores how the Middle East war continues to ripple through the airline industry.

The carrier said the temporary suspensions, effective from August 5 to October 5, are part of a seasonal adjustment to manage capacity growth for 2026. Travelers booked on affected routes will be offered alternate arrangements or refunds under the airline's schedule change policy.

Routes on the Chopping Block

The suspended routes include American Airlines' nonstop service from LAX to Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburgh, and Washington Dulles. Additionally, flights from Charlotte to Ontario, California, and Charlotte to Sacramento are being halted. American emphasized that passengers can still reach these destinations via connecting flights.

“American has seasonally adjusted service on select routes in August and September as the airline refines its capacity growth for 2026,” the airline said in a statement. “American is not suspending any routes indefinitely as part of this adjustment and will continue to proudly offer an industry-leading network with more flights than any other U.S. airline.”

Fuel Costs Drive Industry-Wide Cuts

The move is part of a broader trend as major carriers grapple with volatile oil prices. American Airlines expects its jet fuel bill to rise by more than $4 billion this year, according to Reuters. The war in Iran has sent energy markets into turmoil, with policy experts warning that prices may not ease until the Strait of Hormuz reopens.

American is not alone in trimming its network. Norse Atlantic Airways recently scrapped all LAX flights for the summer season, citing similar fuel cost pressures. The cascading route cuts come as a new poll shows the Iran conflict is deepening the cost-of-living crisis, with most voters blaming the Trump administration's handling of the conflict.

Impact on Travelers

While American insists the suspensions are temporary, the cuts add to the anxiety for travelers already facing higher fares and fewer options. The airline industry frequently adjusts schedules, but the aggressive response to fuel costs suggests carriers are bracing for a prolonged period of high prices. For passengers booked on the suspended routes, American says it will offer rebooking or refunds in line with its policy.

The decision also highlights the vulnerability of West Coast hubs like LAX, which have seen multiple carriers pull back service. As the Iran war continues to disrupt global energy markets, travelers may see more route adjustments ahead.
