President Trump escalated his war with the media over the weekend, boasting of unprecedented economic performance while dismissing critical coverage as “fake news.” In a late-night post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “We have the BEST FINANCIAL NUMBERS EVER, and the FAKE NEWS MEDIA refuses to report them!!!”
The outburst came amid an ongoing standoff between the White House and several major news organizations, including CNN, Politico, and MS NOW, over access to the president. Earlier this month, the administration revoked the credentials of reporters from those outlets, prompting a lawsuit that led to a federal judge ordering their reinstatement.
When asked by MS NOW White House correspondent Akayla Gardner whether he would consider including more favorable outlets in the press pool, Trump responded that he did not, but insisted he wanted “real news, not fake news –– like you.” Gardner pressed further, asking if he preferred tougher questions, to which the president replied, “Be quiet,” before continuing his verbal assault on CNN and MS NOW. This is not the first time Trump has told female reporters to stay “quiet.”
Legal Battle Over Access
The White House’s decision to bar reporters from CNN, Politico, and MS NOW from the grounds drew a swift legal challenge. U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly ruled last Wednesday that the outlets’ access must be restored “immediately,” citing due process and First Amendment concerns. Despite the ruling, reporters were still blocked from the executive mansion on Thursday, and CNN reported that its journalists were excluded from the press pool traveling with Trump on Friday.
Adding to the tension, MS NOW and CNN journalists were denied precredentialed access to the state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday. Trump praised the event as “magnificent” and claimed that the media’s absence was deliberate. “Actually made for Television but, because they’re Fake News, and because they knew how good it would be, they didn’t want credit to be given to ‘TRUMP,’ they refused to be there,” he wrote on Truth Social. “That’s why they have such poor Ratings.”
Media Solidarity and GOP Concerns
In response to the ban, CBS, ABC, NBC, and Fox News boycotted the press pool in solidarity with CNN, which had been part of the rotation. Several Fox News contributors criticized the administration’s move, with chief political analyst Brit Hume warning that if Trump “thinks this will lead to more favorable coverage, I think he’s dreaming.”
The dispute has overshadowed other administration priorities, including the Xi visit and ongoing midterm preparations. As Trump's media ban backfires, some Republicans worry the fight could alienate independent voters. Recent polling shows Trump's approval slipping to new lows, adding to GOP anxieties ahead of November.
The president’s legal team has argued that the exclusions are necessary for security and order, but critics see them as an attempt to punish unfavorable coverage. The judge’s ruling is seen as a rebuke, and national security claims have faced judicial skepticism in related cases.
Meanwhile, the administration continues to push its economic message, with Trump pointing to strong job numbers and stock market gains. But the media standoff threatens to distract from those achievements, as the president’s attacks on the press dominate headlines.
