Former President Donald Trump threw his weight behind Rep. John James (R-Mich.) in the race for Michigan governor, delivering a powerful endorsement that could reshape the Republican primary field. In a post on Truth Social Monday, Trump described James as an "America First Congressman" and touted his credentials as a West Point graduate, combat pilot, Iraq War veteran, and successful businessman.
"It is my Great Honor to endorse America First Congressman, John James, who is running to become the next Governor of the Beautiful State of Michigan!" Trump wrote. He added that James has "proven he has the Courage and Wisdom to deliver strong results for the incredible people of his wonderful State, and our Nation."
James responded swiftly on X, thanking Trump and framing the endorsement as a rallying cry. "Thank you, President Donald J. Trump. The greatest President of my lifetime. Your endorsement is igniting a movement across Michigan, and we are ready to win!" James posted.
The endorsement comes as Michigan's gubernatorial race enters a critical phase. Incumbent Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) is term-limited and cannot seek reelection, though she has been floated as a potential 2028 presidential contender. Whitmer said last month she would not run for president, keeping the focus on the open seat.
James launched his campaign last April, arguing that Michigan has been "held back by a lack of strong, competent leadership" and "dominated by radical, out of touch policies." He called for a return to "common sense" and emphasized his longstanding alliance with Trump. "President Trump and I have been in each other's corner through thick and thin for eight years — no reason that will end now," James said at the time.

A Glengariff Group Inc. survey conducted in April showed James leading the Republican field with 37 percent support among likely GOP voters, followed by businessman Perry Johnson at 19.8 percent. Trump's backing may help James consolidate conservative support and fend off challengers.
James's campaign has focused on economic revitalization and pushing back against progressive policies in Lansing. He has positioned himself as a standard-bearer for the Trump wing of the party, a strategy that resonated in his previous Senate bids.
