The Republican primary for Oklahoma governor is heading to a runoff, pitting state Attorney General Gentner Drummond against former state senator and budget secretary Mike Mazzei, who received a last-minute endorsement from President Donald Trump. Decision Desk HQ confirmed that neither candidate secured a majority in the primary, forcing a second round on Aug. 25.
Drummond entered the race as the early favorite, with limited polling suggesting he had an edge in a crowded field. But Mazzei gained momentum after Trump threw his support behind him just days before the primary, a move that highlighted the president's continued sway over GOP contests. Mazzei has dismissed questions about whether his campaign's nearly $70,000 payment to Trump confidante Roger Stone for consulting services influenced the endorsement.
“I think it's incredibly bizarre and absurd for anyone to think that Donald Trump, President Donald Trump, doesn't make his own decisions about who he wants to endorse,” Mazzei told KOCO5 News, pushing back on critics who saw a quid pro quo.
The runoff will determine the Republican nominee to succeed term-limited Governor Kevin Stitt, a Republican. Oklahoma's deep-red lean makes the GOP primary effectively the decisive contest, with the winner expected to cruise to victory in November. The state has elected Republican governors for nearly 30 years, and Trump carried Oklahoma in all three of his presidential runs.
Mazzei's path mirrors a broader trend of Trump-endorsed candidates winning contested primaries nationwide. His endorsees have ousted incumbents like Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, as well as Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky. However, Trump's record isn't perfect: earlier this month, his pick for Iowa's open governor seat lost, showing limits to his influence.
The race also intersects with other Oklahoma contests. In a separate House primary, a MAGA-aligned candidate backed by Trump is heading to a runoff, reflecting the president's deep reach into state politics. Meanwhile, Oklahoma Senate GOP primary winner Kevin Hern secured his race after Trump and Stitt backed him, underscoring the president's role in shaping the state's political landscape.
Democrats have their own primary, but the winner of the GOP runoff is heavily favored to take the governor's mansion. The state's GOP holds all five House seats and both Senate seats, making it a fortress for the party.
The Mazzei-Drummond runoff will test whether Trump's endorsement can overcome Drummond's institutional advantages, including his tenure as attorney general. It also adds another data point for analysts tracking the president's influence in Republican primaries ahead of the 2026 midterms.
