Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) was taken to a hospital in Toledo on Sunday after a hit-and-run crash, according to her office and local police. The 80-year-old congresswoman was a passenger in a vehicle on its way to church services when the collision occurred.
Kaptur's office said she is "active, alert, and being treated for non-life threatening injuries." In a statement posted on X, her office thanked first responders from the Toledo Police and Fire Departments for their quick response and expressed gratitude to medical staff caring for those involved.
"Congresswoman Kaptur is thankful for the quick actions of first responders from Toledo Police and Fire Departments who arrived promptly on scene, and the medical professionals helping to take care of those involved in the crash," the statement read. "She expressed her deep gratitude to the hundreds of constituents who have reached out and looks forward to returning to a full schedule soon."
Toledo Police Sgt. Mohamad Nasser said officers responded around 10:48 a.m. EST to the intersection of Detroit Avenue and Central Avenue for a "hit-skip" crash—the Ohio term for a hit-and-run. Two people, including Kaptur, were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Nasser noted that the investigation is in its early stages and that accident investigators are on the scene.
Kaptur has represented Ohio's 9th Congressional District since 1983 and is seeking an 18th term in November. She is the longest-serving member of Ohio's congressional delegation by more than two decades. Her Republican challenger is former state Rep. Derek Merrin, whom she narrowly defeated by just 2,382 votes in 2024.
Merrin said on X that he was "saddened" to learn of the accident and asked for prayers for Kaptur and all those injured. Ohio Sen. Jon Husted (R) also offered well-wishes, saying he and his wife Tina "are praying for a quick and full recovery" for Kaptur. Husted added, "We hope the person responsible for this reckless act is apprehended quickly and held accountable."
Other lawmakers, including Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) and Rep. Warren Davidson (R-Ohio), also expressed support. Biggs said he was "praying" for Kaptur and hoped she would be "restored to full health in short order." Davidson wrote, "Praying for a full and swift recovery for Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, and that law enforcement quickly finds the driver who fled the scene and holds them accountable."
The incident comes amid heightened attention on road safety and accountability, as seen in recent discussions about police oversight. Kaptur's office said they await further details from Toledo Police as the investigation continues.
