The U.S. Army is channeling $2.2 billion into the development of nuclear microreactors at five military installations, a move aimed at shoring up national security through more resilient energy supplies. The initiative, dubbed the Janus Program, underscores the military's growing concern about reliance on external power grids that could be vulnerable to disruption.
Nuclear microreactors, which generate between 1 and 20 megawatts of thermal energy, can be used directly for heat or converted into electricity. According to the Department of Energy, these units are factory-built and compact enough to be transported by truck, with the capacity to operate for up to a decade without refueling.
The Army selected five private vendors to spearhead the rollout at bases primarily located in the South, with deployments scheduled from fiscal 2027 through fiscal 2031. The chosen sites and their contractors include Fort Bragg, North Carolina (Antares Nuclear Inc.), Fort Campbell, Kentucky (BWXT Advanced Technologies LLC), Fort Hood, Texas (General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems), Fort Benning, Georgia (Radiant Industries Inc.), and Fort Drum, New York (Westinghouse Government Services).
Army Secretary Dan Driscoll framed the initiative as a direct response to directives from President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. "Since launching the Janus Program, our mandate from President Trump and Secretary Hegseth has been clear: secure the power our warfighters need to train, deploy and win," Driscoll said in a statement. He added that the contracts "accelerate our ability to deliver safe, reliable baseload power directly to our installations," emphasizing the goal of "building the energy resilience necessary to project combat power globally, without relying on potentially vulnerable external grids."
The selection of Fort Drum was notably influenced by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who specifically requested the base be included due to its mission requirements for secure power generation, as reported by the Associated Press. Owen West, director of the Department of Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), stressed the urgency of the effort: "We need more power. We need it delivered faster and cheaper, and we need it to be more reliable." West added, "With Janus, DIU is assisting the Army's micro reactor build — speeding military energy production to protect the nation."
Currently, no nuclear microreactors supply power to the commercial grid, and the military relies on diesel generators as backup for critical infrastructure. However, concerns persist about the availability of fuel for transport during a national emergency. To test resilience, the Army has announced a "Black Start Exercise" scheduled between August and September, which will unexpectedly cut power to selected installations to assess their ability to handle outages.
The move comes amid broader discussions about energy reliability and the military's push for self-sufficiency. As nuclear projects face regulatory and logistical hurdles, the Army's microreactor plan represents a significant bet on advanced nuclear technology. The initiative also aligns with growing political debates over energy infrastructure, as policymakers weigh the benefits of reliable power against environmental and safety concerns. With the Janus Program, the military is positioning itself at the forefront of a potential energy revolution, though questions about fuel logistics and long-term viability remain.
