Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (D-Va.) made a pointed comparison early Thursday, noting that the number of arrests for alleged vandalism at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has surpassed those related to the Jeffrey Epstein case. Speaking on DC News Now’s “Sunrise on The Hill,” the House Oversight Committee member said, “There’s been more people arrested over this than the Epstein files.” He added, “That’s how this administration operates these days.”

This week, five individuals were taken into custody for allegedly damaging the newly renovated Reflecting Pool. Authorities claim they tampered with the landmark, but some of those detained argue they only touched the water. The charge—destruction of government property—carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Disparity in Justice

Subramanyam’s comments highlight a broader frustration among Democrats who have pressed the Trump administration to pursue Epstein’s associates after releasing millions of files earlier this year. The administration has detailed a vandalism theory about the pool damage, but critics say the focus on the Reflecting Pool detracts from more serious investigations.

The arrests have sparked debate over proportionality. Some Republicans have defended the crackdown, with one proposing to turn the pool into a wetland to avoid future incidents. Others, however, have questioned the severity of the charges. A former Olympian arrested in the incident has claimed his rights were violated.

Political Implications

The Reflecting Pool episode has become a flashpoint in the ongoing battle between the Trump administration and its critics. Subramanyam’s remarks echo a sentiment that the administration is prioritizing optics over substantive justice. Meanwhile, the Epstein case remains unresolved, with no high-profile arrests of his associates despite the release of thousands of documents.

Senator Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) recently dismissed threats of prosecution over the pool as hypocritical, suggesting the administration’s focus on minor incidents is a distraction. The White House has insisted that the pool damage is a serious matter, with President Trump claiming sabotage despite a lack of evidence.

The administration has even deployed the National Guard to address algae and paint issues at the pool, further straining resources. Additionally, dead ducks found near the site have added to the renovation woes, fueling criticism of the administration’s management.

As the debate continues, Subramanyam and other Democrats are likely to keep pressing for accountability in the Epstein case, arguing that the Reflecting Pool arrests are a symbol of misplaced priorities.
