Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) took to Instagram on Saturday to share a deeply personal decision: she is freezing her eggs. In a series of stories, the progressive lawmaker opened up about the process, which she said she had been weighing and saving for over a long period.
“Usually, I keep my private life quite private, but I have made the decision to start freezing my eggs, and I want to share that with anyone who is — and I want to share this because I was weighing it for a very long time, and I think that, you know, I was saving for it for a very long time, and there just isn’t a ton out there, I feel, and sometimes it can feel very daunting,” Ocasio-Cortez said in the Instagram story.
The New York Democrat, who has been a prominent voice on reproductive rights, used the platform to highlight broader gaps in how women’s bodies are discussed and understood. “And as women in general, we are not taught about our bodies, we are not prepared for our own lives, whether that is in puberty, whether that is in pregnancy, whether that is in perimenopause, menopause, whether that is in so many different aspects of our lives,” she added.
In addition to her remarks, Ocasio-Cortez posted a video of herself alongside her French Bulldog, Deco, explaining the medication involved and then administering an injection. After the shot, she remarked that it “wasn’t so bad.”
The congresswoman has long championed women’s health issues, particularly reproductive health. Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in 2022, she urged men to become advocates for women’s rights, arguing that those unaffected by a problem must speak up for those who are marginalized.
“For almost every woman that has gotten an abortion, there’s a man who has either been affected or liberated by that abortion too,” Ocasio-Cortez told GQ at the time.
Her latest disclosure comes as she remains a central figure in Democratic politics, with recent polls showing her leading the 2028 field in New Hampshire. Her willingness to share such a personal medical decision underscores her ongoing effort to normalize conversations about reproductive health and encourage others to seek information and support.
Ocasio-Cortez’s openness has also drawn attention to the financial and emotional hurdles many women face when considering egg freezing, a procedure that can be costly and is not always covered by insurance. By detailing her own experience, she has added a personal dimension to the broader policy debate over reproductive healthcare access.
