House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) on Thursday forcefully rejected President Trump’s demand that he face criminal charges for inciting violence, labeling the president’s latest Truth Social attack a “deranged rant” from a leader consumed by personal grievances rather than governing.

In a video posted to Instagram, Jeffries opened with a nod to the New York Knicks’ playoff success before pivoting to Trump’s morning broadside. “What’s up, y’all? The Knicks are up two-zip, I’m feeling good, and then I got to wake up this morning and deal with another deranged rant from an out of control president, threatening to criminally prosecute me,” Jeffries said.

DC Crime Stats Probe: 13 Officers Suspended as Pirro Alleges Systematic Downgrading
Thirteen Washington, D.C., police officers, including two high-ranking commanders, were placed on leave amid an internal probe into manipulated crime statistics. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said the findings confirm her office's earlier suspicions.

“You ain’t intimidating a damn person,” he added. “We’re going to continue to stay on your case, but what’s wrong with you, bro? Why do I stay on your mind? You ain’t got nothing better to do? Gas prices are surging, grocery bills are out of control, the American people are drowning in your failed economy and you ain’t got nothing better to do but to think about me?”

Trump’s Thursday morning post on Truth Social called Jeffries “Low IQ” and asserted he “should be charged with INCITING VIOLENCE!” The president also claimed “The Radical Left Democrats actually want to Destroy our Country.”

The exchange is the latest volley in an escalating feud between the two leaders. Last week, Jeffries stood by his pledge to use “maximum warfare” in the redistricting fight ahead of the midterms, even after a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner where Trump was present. That stance drew Trump’s ire and prompted the president to call for prosecution.

Over the weekend, Trump also attacked Jeffries for calling the Supreme Court “illegitimate” after a Voting Rights Act ruling. In a Sunday Truth Social post, Trump asked why Jeffries wasn’t subject to impeachment, comparing it to his own impeachment over “a perfect phone call.” Jeffries responded on X with a simple jab: “Jeffries Derangement Syndrome.”

The back-and-forth underscores the deepening partisan divide as both parties gear up for the midterm elections. Jeffries, a rising Democratic star, has increasingly become a target for Trump, who frequently uses social media to lash out at critics. The president’s focus on Jeffries comes amid broader economic concerns, including surging gas prices and rising grocery costs, which Democrats have seized on to attack Trump’s policies.

Political analysts note that Trump’s attacks on Jeffries mirror his strategy of targeting prominent Democrats to rally his base, but the personal nature of the exchanges—including the president’s demand for criminal charges—marks an escalation. Jeffries, for his part, has shown no signs of backing down, using humor and direct confrontation to counter the president’s rhetoric.

The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment on Trump’s post. Meanwhile, the clash has drawn attention to broader tensions in Washington, including debates over pay-to-play concerns in Trump pardons and the ongoing redistricting battles that have fueled the conflict.
