In the final stretch of the midterm campaign, the Senate battlefield is widening, with several races once considered safe now in play. Both parties see opportunities for surprise wins that could tip the balance of power.
According to Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ), Ohio, Iowa, and Kansas are pure toss-ups, while Texas, Maine, and Alaska have moved just outside that category. But beyond these headline contests, a handful of other states are showing unexpected competitiveness, with 15 states rated as 'lean' or 'likely' for either party.
South Carolina: A Republican Stronghold Under Pressure
Republicans are fighting to hold the seat long occupied by the late Sen. Lindsey Graham. After his death, his sister, Sen. Darline Graham, was appointed and is now running for a full term with President Trump's backing. Despite her primary win, her inexperience has sparked concern, prompting last-minute visits from Trump to the Palmetto State.
Geoffrey Skelley, DDHQ's chief elections analyst, notes that South Carolina is 'a little bit more of a reach for Democrats' than toss-up states like Kansas, due to its racial polarization and voting patterns. Both DDHQ and Cook Political Report rate it 'lean Republican.' Cook's Jessica Taylor calls it 'an early barometer' for Democrats—if the margin is close, it could signal a tough night for the GOP.
Florida: A Red Wall Showing Cracks
In Florida, appointed Sen. Ashley Moody is leading Democrat Angie Nixon by single digits, but the race has tightened from 'safe' to 'likely Republican.' Nixon, who upset Trump whistleblower Alex Vindman in the primary, faces headwinds due to her DSA affiliation, says Taylor. However, shifting Hispanic and Latino voters, who moved toward Trump in 2024 but are now frustrated with the economy and immigration, could give Democrats an opening.
The winner serves the final two years of Marco Rubio's term and must run again in 2028.
New Hampshire: A Surprise Toss-Up
Former Sen. John Sununu is making a comeback bid, but Rep. Chris Pappas has pulled ahead. The race has become a toss-up, with Sununu accusing Pappas of benefiting from name confusion with his brother, former Gov. Chris Sununu. Pappas leads in DDHQ's 'likely Democrat' rating, while Cook has it 'lean Democrat.' The state is also a potential split-ticket scenario, with GOP Gov. Kelly Ayotte favored to win reelection.
Minnesota: Open Seat and Scandals
In Minnesota, the open seat vacated by Tina Smith has Republicans hopeful. Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, backed by Smith, faces former NFL reporter Michele Tafoya. Republicans point to a sprawling fraud scandal, while Democrats highlight economic woes and backlash to Trump's immigration crackdown. Cook rates it 'lean Democrat.'
With the midterms set to reshape Congress, these five races could deliver Election Day surprises. As Trump's final campaign push intensifies, the outcome in these states will be crucial.
