A new study from the University of Cambridge has found that widely used sweeteners in foods and beverages may disrupt the growth of essential gut bacteria, raising fresh questions about the health impacts of these additives.

The research, published in a peer-reviewed journal, examined 25 species of gut bacteria—including beneficial, neutral, and potentially harmful strains—by growing them in a lab and exposing them to 39 different sweeteners commonly found in consumer products.

Both natural and artificial sweeteners were tested, and scientists measured how well the bacteria multiplied after exposure. The results showed that several sweeteners slowed bacterial growth, with two particularly important species of gut bacteria being directly impacted by one specific sweetener.

“We were surprised by the extent of the effect,” said one of the lead researchers. “These findings suggest that even low doses of certain sweeteners could alter the delicate balance of our gut microbiome.”

Gut bacteria play a critical role in digestion, immune function, and overall health. Disruptions to this ecosystem have been linked to conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease.

The study adds to a growing body of evidence that sweeteners, often marketed as healthier alternatives to sugar, may have unintended consequences. Last year, the World Health Organization advised against using non-sugar sweeteners for weight control, citing potential long-term risks.

Consumer advocacy groups are now calling for more rigorous safety testing. “This study underscores the need for regulators to reassess the widespread use of these additives,” said a spokesperson for a food safety watchdog.

Industry representatives, however, argue that the findings are preliminary and note that the research was conducted in a lab, not in living organisms. “Real-world consumption patterns are different,” said a trade group statement.

The Cambridge team plans to expand their research to human trials to better understand how these sweeteners affect the gut microbiome in everyday diets. Meanwhile, health experts advise moderation and suggest focusing on whole foods rather than processed products with added sweeteners.
