Charles Booker secured the Democratic nomination for Kentucky's open Senate seat on Tuesday, defeating former Marine fighter pilot Amy McGrath in a rematch that highlighted the party's shifting dynamics in the state, according to Decision Desk HQ projections.

The victory marks a reversal of fortune for Booker, a former state representative who lost to McGrath by two percentage points in the 2020 primary. McGrath went on to lose the general election to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell by nearly 20 points. Booker also ran for Senate in 2022, winning the primary but losing to Sen. Rand Paul by a similar margin.

Bottoms Secures Democratic Nomination in Georgia Governor's Race
Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has won the Democratic primary for Georgia governor, clearing the 50% threshold to avoid a runoff. She is set to compete in a closely watched general election.

Booker will now face Rep. Andy Barr, who won the Republican primary earlier Tuesday. The general election is expected to be an uphill battle for Democrats in a state that has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1992.

Booker's Path to Victory

Booker entered the race as the favorite, buoyed by his previous statewide campaigns and a rising national profile among progressive Democrats. Public polling was sparse, but a recent Emerson College survey showed Booker leading McGrath 36 percent to 18 percent. He also secured the endorsement of former Rep. John Yarmuth, Kentucky's only Democratic House member from 2013 until his retirement in 2023.

Booker most recently served as head of Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear's Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. In interviews, he has argued that Democrats can flip the state this year by building a broad coalition. “We have pulled people into the coalition that voted for Trump, that voted for Bernie Sanders, that have never voted before,” Booker told local media. “We have done something that Kentucky has been demanding for years, and we listened to them.”

GOP Primary and General Election Outlook

Barr's nomination sets up a contest between two candidates who have both run statewide before. The Republican primary also saw a challenge from former United Nations Ambassador Kelly Craft, but Barr emerged as the projected winner. The race to succeed McConnell has drawn national attention, with control of the Senate at stake. Kentucky is rated as a safe Republican seat by most analysts, but Democrats hope Booker's progressive message can energize young and minority voters.

The primary results come as other key races unfold across the country. In Pennsylvania, progressive candidate Rabb won the PA-3 primary, while in Georgia, Jackson and Jones are headed to a runoff in the GOP governor primary. The Kentucky Senate primary has also drawn comparisons to the ouster of Rep. Thomas Massie in a separate Kentucky primary, as Trump's influence continues to reshape the GOP.

Booker's campaign has focused on economic justice, healthcare access, and criminal justice reform. He has criticized Barr for his ties to corporate donors and his votes against the Affordable Care Act. Barr, meanwhile, has emphasized his conservative credentials and support for Trump's agenda.
