Amazon has agreed to pay $309 million to resolve a class action lawsuit alleging that it improperly withheld refunds for returned products over several years. The settlement, announced in January, covers customers who faced issues with refunds on returns made during the specified period.

While Amazon denies any wrongdoing, the company will also provide additional benefits as part of the agreement, according to Reuters. The settlement aims to compensate affected consumers without an admission of liability.

Amazon to Pay $309M to Settle Claims Over Unrefunded Returns
Amazon will pay $309 million to settle claims it wrongly denied refunds for product returns. Eligible customers may receive payment; email notices have been sent.

In a statement, an Amazon spokesperson said an internal review in 2025 found “a small subset of returns where we issued a refund without the payment completing, or where we could not verify that the correct item had been sent back to us, so no refund had been issued.” The company emphasized that these cases were rare and that it has since improved its return processes.

Eligible customers are being notified via email, and the settlement administrator is sending out notices with instructions on how to file a claim. Those who believe they qualify should check their inboxes, including spam folders, for communications from the settlement administrator.

The settlement is separate from other recent consumer payouts, such as the Apple Siri privacy settlement and the CVS data privacy settlement, which also involve direct payments to consumers.

Legal experts say the case highlights the growing scrutiny on e-commerce return policies and the importance of transparent refund procedures. The settlement also comes amid broader regulatory pressure on Amazon, including a $2.5 billion FTC settlement that expanded payouts to consumers.

Customers who have not yet received an email but believe they are affected can visit the settlement website to check their eligibility and submit a claim. The deadline for filing claims will be specified in the notice, and payments will be distributed after the court approves the final settlement.

Amazon has said it will continue to improve its returns process to avoid similar issues in the future. The company maintains that the vast majority of returns are handled smoothly, and the affected cases represent a tiny fraction of overall transactions.

For now, affected customers are urged to act promptly. The settlement administrator warns that failure to submit a claim by the deadline will result in forfeiture of any payment.
