The U.S. Navy has officially identified the service member lost over the Arabian Sea earlier this month as Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards, a decorated helicopter pilot and commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5 (HSC-5). The announcement came Wednesday, ending a tense period of search operations that spanned more than four days.
Edwards, a native of Oakland, Oregon, went missing on July 1 after his MH-60S Seahawk helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing in the Arabian Sea. The Navy declared him dead following an extensive search that covered over 14,000 square miles and lasted more than 102 hours. Search efforts were officially suspended on July 5.
The operation involved a massive deployment of assets, including ships and aircraft from two carrier strike groups, two Patrol and Reconnaissance Squadrons flying P-8A Poseidon aircraft, and multiple Air Force aircraft. The scale of the search underscored the priority placed on finding the missing commander.
Three other crew members were recovered after the landing and are reported to be in stable condition. The Navy has stated that the cause of the emergency remains under investigation, but there is currently no evidence suggesting hostile action played a role.
Capt. Matthew Lewis, commander of Carrier Air Wing 7, paid tribute to Edwards in a statement. “Commander Gabe Edwards was the epitome of selfless leadership, who dedicated himself to service and sacrifice for the last 20 years,” Lewis said. “Our deepest gratitude and sympathy go out to his family, who should know that Gabe led his squadron, the HSC-5 ‘Nightdippers,’ with integrity and fortitude.”
A 2006 graduate of Norfolk State University, Edwards was commissioned through the Naval ROTC program. He earned his “Wings of Gold” as a helicopter pilot in 2008 and went on to serve with multiple squadrons, including HSC-22 “Sea Knights,” HSC-84 “Red Wolves,” Naval Special Warfare Group 4, and HSC-85 “Firehawks.” He assumed command of HSC-5 in July 2025.
His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. Edwards had also been selected for promotion to captain in fiscal year 2027.
Edwards is survived by his wife, Rebecca, and their two children. Rebecca Edwards released a statement expressing gratitude for the search efforts. “We are profoundly grateful to every Sailor, aviator, and Airman who devoted countless hours, extraordinary skill, and unwavering determination in the effort to bring Gabe home,” she said. “Gabe has dedicated his life to serving his country with honor, courage, and commitment.”
Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5 is currently deployed to the Middle East aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush. The incident adds to a series of recent military mishaps, including a Marine declared dead after going missing off the California coast. The Navy continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the emergency landing.
