Far-right provocateur Laura Loomer erupted in anger on Monday after President Trump offered warm praise for New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani during a chummy press conference at Gracie Mansion. The meeting took place just before the United Nations General Assembly convenes in the city on Tuesday.
“I’m pissed off,” Loomer posted on X shortly after Trump and Mamdani appeared together. Loomer, a vocal Trump supporter who has informally advised the president, did not mention Mamdani by name in that post, but she has previously smeared him as an “Islamic jihadist.”
“We work so hard to combat the radical left and the anti-American Islamic jihadists who work to destroy our country everyday,” she wrote. “And for what? So they can be rewarded?”
The president’s sit-down with Mamdani—New York’s first Muslim mayor—marked another chapter in their unexpectedly cordial relationship. Trump called Gracie Mansion one of his “favorite places in the World.” The two met privately for about an hour before taking questions from reporters. Trump said he hoped Mamdani would succeed despite their political differences.
“I certainly hope he will be a great mayor,” Trump told reporters. “I want what’s good for New York. I want what’s good for the country.” He added, “I want him to be a great mayor, and he’s certainly got potential, got great potential.”
Their discussion covered immigration, affordability, and a proposed housing development at Sunnyside Yards in Queens that would likely need federal approvals and funding. Mamdani said he would keep working with the Trump administration to deliver results for New Yorkers.
Trump and Mamdani have clashed repeatedly over the mayor’s progressive agenda. Trump attacked Mamdani throughout last year’s mayoral race, but the two struck a surprisingly warm tone when Mamdani, then mayor-elect, visited the White House in November. That shift has apparently unsettled some on the right, with Loomer’s outburst underscoring the tensions within Trump’s base over his outreach to a left-wing mayor.
As Trump prepares to take the UN stage, the Gracie Mansion visit offered a rare moment of cross-party comity. But for Loomer and her allies, the image of Trump praising Mamdani was a bitter pill—one she made clear she would not swallow quietly.
