A coalition of House Democrats led by Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas) is demanding the Trump administration break its long-standing silence on Israel's undeclared nuclear weapons program, arguing the secrecy poses a direct threat to U.S. forces and regional stability amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.
In a letter sent Monday to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Castro and more than two dozen lawmakers highlighted the dangers of fighting alongside a nuclear-armed ally whose capabilities Washington refuses to officially acknowledge. The letter warns that the current environment, with multiple nuclear states directly involved or adjacent to the U.S.-Israeli campaign against Iran, creates a high risk of miscalculation or accidental escalation.
“We are, in the fullest sense, fighting this war side by side with a country whose potential nuclear weapons program the United States officially refuses to acknowledge,” the lawmakers wrote. “The risks of miscalculation, escalation, and nuclear use in this environment are not theoretical.”
The letter specifically notes that Iranian missile strikes have targeted Israel's Dimona nuclear facility following the initial U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran on Feb. 28. This direct threat to a suspected nuclear site, the Democrats argue, underscores the urgency of transparency. They call on the administration to treat Israel like any other nuclear-armed state — including the United Kingdom, France, Russia, India, Pakistan, China, and North Korea — and provide Congress with a full accounting of its capabilities.
“If any such disclosure of any Israeli nuclear weapons capability would implicate U.S. laws concerning nonproliferation, we are ready to work with you to address those concerns through legislative action,” Castro and his colleagues wrote. The request comes as tensions with Iran remain high, and as some lawmakers question the origins of the conflict. Senior administration officials said in early March that the Israeli plan to strike Iran prompted the U.S. to take preemptive action, a dynamic that has fueled criticism from both parties.
The letter asks Rubio for specific details: what Israel's nuclear capacity is, what enrichment capabilities it possesses, what assurances it has given against using nuclear weapons, and under what conditions it might deploy them. The lawmakers argue that Congress has a constitutional duty to be fully informed about the nuclear balance in a region where the U.S. is now a direct combatant.
“We cannot develop coherent nonproliferation policy for the Middle East, including with respect to Iran’s civil nuclear program and Saudi Arabia’s civil nuclear ambitions, while maintaining a policy of official silence about the nuclear weapons capabilities of one party central to the ongoing conflict,” the letter states.
The Democrats point to decades of public evidence, including a 1986 Sunday Times of London report and former Defense Secretary Robert Gates’ 2006 Senate testimony, in which he listed “the Israelis to the west” among regional nuclear powers. President Trump himself told reporters in March that Israel “would never” use nuclear weapons against Iran, a comment that some lawmakers say only deepens the need for official clarity.
The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The push for transparency comes as the administration faces growing scrutiny over its handling of the Iran conflict and broader Middle East policy. Meanwhile, some GOP lawmakers have defended Trump’s approach, with one Republican representative recently calling Iran a “petulant child” testing the president’s resolve amid naval clashes.
The letter also arrives amid broader political tensions, as Trump-backed challengers target incumbent Republicans in Indiana over redistricting, and as Democratic leaders warn that the president’s rhetoric is normalizing political violence. Billionaire Trump ally Ken Griffin has predicted a Democratic House takeover is “almost a certainty,” adding to the pressure on the administration.
