What started as a Texas-only pit stop has evolved into a cult-favorite travel empire, and now Buc-ee's is making its biggest leap yet into the West. The chain, known for its cavernous stores, Beaver Nuggets, and brisket sandwiches, is set to open its westernmost location soon, with a flurry of additional stores on the drawing board.
As of 2021, Buc-ee's operated just over 40 stores, nearly all in Texas. Today, that number has swelled to more than 60 locations across a dozen states, with Texas still hosting 36 of them. The company's rapid expansion mirrors broader trends in retail, as chains like Trader Joe's and Raising Cane's also accelerate their national footprints.
The new Colorado store—the chain's westernmost outpost—marks a strategic push into a region where Buc-ee's has been absent. Company officials say the location will feature the brand's signature mix of fuel pumps, expansive convenience store aisles, and a deli counter that has turned the chain into a destination for road trippers.
Buc-ee's growth has been fueled by a loyal customer base that treats the stores as more than just gas stations. With merchandise ranging from branded clothing to home decor, and food offerings that include fresh brisket and kolaches, the chain has carved out a niche that defies typical convenience store expectations.
The expansion comes as other national retailers are also scaling up. Target, for example, has opened six new locations and plans dozens more, reflecting a broader retail resurgence. Buc-ee's, however, remains unique in its focus on the travel center model, often building stores that span 50,000 square feet or more.
Industry analysts point to Buc-ee's ability to generate repeat visits through its food and branded merchandise as a key driver of its growth. The chain's new western location is expected to tap into a steady stream of interstate travelers, particularly those heading to or from the Rocky Mountains.
While the company has not disclosed a specific opening date, construction is reportedly on schedule. Buc-ee's has also teased additional locations in other western states, though details remain under wraps.
The expansion is a testament to the chain's staying power in a competitive market. As gas stations and convenience stores increasingly compete for travelers' dollars, Buc-ee's has turned a basic necessity into a destination experience—one that shows no signs of slowing down.
