The White House has announced plans for an unprecedented fireworks display on July 4, aiming to set a new Guinness World Record as part of the nation's 250th anniversary celebrations.
Freedom 250, the commission overseeing the semiquincentennial events, is teaming up with fireworks manufacturer Pyrotecnico to break the record for the largest firework display, according to details shared with The Hill. The show will feature 860,754 fireworks over 40 minutes, surpassing the 810,904 shells used in a 2016 New Year's display in the Philippines that lasted nearly an hour.
Pyrotecnico, which has coordinated fireworks at major events like the Super Bowl and Coachella, said the attempt would make the July 4 spectacle "not only a once-in-a-generation spectacle but a landmark moment in fireworks history." The company already holds a Guinness World Record for the largest daytime fireworks display, set earlier this year at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway with a synchronized drone performance.
The show, themed "patriotic" and dominated by red, white, and blue, will launch from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, West Potomac Park, and eight barges on the Potomac River, starting around 9:40 p.m. EDT. More than 50 trucks and about 60 crew members will be involved in transporting and setting up the massive payload.
This effort comes amid broader economic anxieties, as consumer sentiment hits record lows due to geopolitical tensions, and gas prices climb to record highs amid the Iran conflict. The White House has not commented on how the record attempt fits into these concerns.
Freedom 250 has also organized other events for the anniversary, including the 16-day "Great American State Fair" on the National Mall, where federal agencies, all 50 states, five territories, and Washington, D.C., will showcase their culture and work. The Hill has reached out to Freedom 250 and the White House for further details on the fireworks record bid.
