Tractor Supply Company is moving forward with a significant downsizing of its Petsense by Tractor Supply chain, confirming that more than 70 stores across 17 states will close in the coming weeks. The closures, first announced in June, are part of a broader effort to streamline operations and focus on more profitable segments of the pet business.
During an earnings call, Tractor Supply CEO Hal Lawton explained that the company is redirecting “resources towards higher growth, higher return opportunities”, according to CoStar. He noted that the stores slated for closure had been generating negative cash flow, and that after the wind-down, the company expects to have a “very strong, profitable Petsense business” that aligns with its broader pet ecosystem.
The specific locations were not initially disclosed, but investment firm Gordon Brothers—which also handled Big Lots’ bankruptcy—has now listed more than 70 Petsense properties as available for lease. A Tractor Supply representative confirmed to Nexstar that the stores on the list will close, with a wind-down process expected to last eight to ten weeks.
