A U.S. Park Police officer was wounded in a shooting Monday evening in Southeast Washington, D.C., in what the agency's chief described as an ambush. The officer, a veteran of the force, was released from the hospital Tuesday morning after receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries to the upper body.

An 'Ambush' During an Investigation

Park Police Chief Scott Brecht stated that the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. ET as officers were conducting an investigation while driving an unmarked vehicle in the 5000 block of Queens Stroll Place SE, near the Maryland border. At least two gunmen opened fire on the vehicle. "We do have some indications we believe potentially they did know he was a police officer," said interim D.C. Metropolitan Police Department Chief Jeffery Carroll, though he emphasized that motive remains part of the ongoing probe.

The wounded officer received immediate first aid at the scene before being transported by a Park Police helicopter to a local hospital. Chief Brecht confirmed the officer's injuries were not life-threatening. The Park Police, which operates under the National Park Service, holds jurisdiction across the entire District of Columbia.

Manhunt for Two Suspects

Authorities are searching for two male suspects. One is described as wearing a white hoodie with blue jeans, while the other was clad entirely in black with white stripes down the sleeves and pant legs. Shell casings were recovered from the scene, but investigators said they do not yet know the exact weapons used. There is "no indication" that any law enforcement officer returned fire during the incident, according to Chief Carroll.

Carroll and Brecht announced that the Park Police and MPD are jointly leading the investigation. They have appealed to the public for any information, images, or video related to the shooting. Tips can be directed to MPD at (202) 727-9099 or sent anonymously by texting 50411. Brecht noted the attack was captured on camera.

Federal Response and Political Reactions

The shooting prompted a swift response from multiple federal agencies and District officials. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said she was briefed on the incident and offered prayers for the officer's quick recovery. "We are grateful for all our law enforcement officers and first responders for their quick response," she stated.

Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed she spoke with Mayor Bowser and Chief Carroll, pledging that the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the U.S. Marshals Service would assist MPD "in any way we can." FBI Director Kash Patel echoed this commitment on social media, writing, "The FBI is actively supporting the investigation alongside our law enforcement partners and will bring those responsible to justice."

The incident highlights the persistent challenges of violent crime and officer safety in the nation's capital, even as federal law enforcement faces other operational pressures, such as the staffing crises triggered by recent Department of Homeland Security funding lapses. It also occurs amid ongoing legal debates over police conduct and protections, following recent rulings like the Supreme Court's decision to reinforce the qualified immunity doctrine for officers.

Witness Accounts and Scene

Video from the scene showed a heavy presence of FBI agents, Homeland Security Investigations officers, MPD, and Park Police personnel. One witness described the gunfire as "rapid fire" and recounted the moment she heard the shots. "I just ducked, it was really terrifying," she told local media.

The shooting near the District's border follows other recent violent incidents in the region, including a Maryland shooting that led to murder charges against a professional athlete. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to determine a precise motive and locate the suspects responsible for the attack on federal officers.
