Watching the dedication of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago brought back a vivid memory: the night in 2007 when then-Senator Barack Obama pitched his vision to Iowa caucus-goers. It felt like a turning point—a new kind of politics was taking shape, and I wanted in.
I was fortunate to meet Obama twice before he won the White House. The first meeting came in June 2007, when I spent 45 minutes introducing him to a group of 30 prominent Democrats in Orange County. The second was a month before he accepted the Democratic nomination in Denver, at a major fundraiser at the Balboa Bay Club.
When it was my turn for a photo, Obama surprised me by saying, “I remember you from last year.” I was thrilled and momentarily at a loss for words. After the photo, I turned back and said, “Senator, we’re all counting on you.” He replied, “I won’t let you down.” He never did—not on policy, leadership, or personal conduct.
During his eight years in office, Obama consistently reminded Americans that our collective national interests should outweigh selfish pursuits. He understood that habeas corpus, press freedom, and peaceful transfers of power are not abstract ideals but the bedrock of democracy. That brief exchange at the Balboa Bay Club wasn’t just a political moment; it was a promise made and kept.
The years since Obama left office have underscored just how critical character, temperament, and respect for the rule of law are in a president. Our politics have grown darker, more divisive, and more centered on personal gain than common purpose. Obama has noted Trump's obsession, but the erosion of norms runs deeper.
My hope is that millions visiting the Obama Presidential Center will be reminded of a time when hope, unity, and faith in democratic ideals held a more prominent place in our national conversation. The star-studded dedication drew former presidents and performers, but the real legacy is the example of leadership itself.
