Podcaster Joe Rogan has sounded the alarm over the Trump administration's deployment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers across the United States, describing the move as a dangerous precedent that could be exploited by future authoritarian leaders.
Speaking on the Wednesday episode of his podcast, Rogan argued that the current use of ICE agents in cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area sets a troubling pattern. "A different ruler could use this precedent in a very damaging way for our free society," he said. "That's my perspective on it."
The comments come amid a broader debate over the administration's immigration enforcement tactics. Viral videos showing officers clashing with protesters and, in some cases, using excessive force have ignited controversy. Rogan, who endorsed President Trump in 2024, has previously compared ICE operations to the Gestapo.
Rogan specifically criticized the training and identification of these forces. "They're trained for seven weeks—much less than police officers or the military," he noted. "And then you have this militarized police force with no identification on the streets. That's a precedent you might like when it's for a cause you support, but it could easily be for a cause you do not."
The podcaster expressed concern that supporters of the crackdown are ignoring long-term risks. "I am very concerned with this dangerous precedent," he said. "People accept it because they want this result now, and they don't realize this could become a common occurrence." He drew parallels to the use of National Guard and militarized police during COVID-19 lockdowns, calling such scenarios "scary."
Rogan's critique touches on a broader debate about the militarization of law enforcement, especially in immigration enforcement. The Trump administration has ramped up ICE operations as part of its crackdown on undocumented immigrants, with Congress pouring billions into the effort. However, GOP infighting over immigration funding and related bills has created political turbulence.
Rogan's warning resonates with civil libertarians who fear the erosion of due process. "It scares the hell out of me when you have a justification for militarized police with masks on that are just grabbing people," he said. His remarks have added fuel to the ongoing debate over whether these tactics undermine democratic norms.
The Senate's recent moves on a $70 billion immigration bill highlight the high stakes. As the administration pushes forward, Rogan's warning serves as a reminder that today's emergency measures could become tomorrow's routine abuses.
