New York Attorney General Letitia James has sharply criticized Mayor Zohran Mamdani for throwing his support behind a slate of democratic socialist candidates in recent primaries, warning that his strategy is tearing the party apart. In an interview with CNN, James expressed frustration that Mamdani's endorsements are elevating newcomers who lack deep ties to local communities.
“Some of the candidates that he has supported are individuals who do not understand the politics of New York City, the cultural differences from district to district, who have not been part of the history and the struggle of some of these districts, and are relatively new to the body politic,” James said.
According to the attorney general, several of Mamdani-backed contenders fail to grasp the nuanced issues of race and class that define New York's diverse political landscape. Mamdani's DSA-aligned slate scored notable victories, including Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier unseating incumbents in House races, along with wins in two state Senate and four Assembly contests.
James noted that other Democratic colleagues have privately voiced disappointment over Mamdani's aggressive push to reshape the party. “All of us are a little frustrated with the Democratic Party. But you don’t blow it up. That’s what MAGA has done,” she told CNN, likening the mayor's approach to the divisive tactics of Donald Trump's movement.
The growing influence of Mamdani's socialist coalition raises concerns about strained relationships with key Democratic lawmakers in Congress, local investors, and other power brokers in New York. However, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries downplayed the internal strife, pointing to President Trump's willingness to work with the mayor as evidence that the party isn't veering too far left.
“No, Donald Trump has a working relationship with the mayor of the city of New York, and he’s made that publicly and explicitly clear to America not once but twice in the Oval Office,” Jeffries told reporters, deflecting questions about whether the party is shifting leftward after the primary results.
Trump and Mamdani have met at the White House twice—in February and November—surprising many socialist critics. Photos showed them shaking hands and smiling. Despite that cordiality, Trump took to Truth Social on Wednesday to blast the primary outcomes, posting: “America the Beautiful will NEVER be a Communist Country!!!”
The tensions reflect a broader ideological battle within the Democratic Party, as Bernie Sanders' socialist blueprint continues to reshape the party, pushing traditional centrists to the margins. James' blunt criticism signals that establishment figures are pushing back against Mamdani's rising influence, even as his candidates gain ground.
Observers say the outcome of these primaries could alter the balance of power in Albany and Washington, with Mamdani's allies now positioned to challenge moderate policies. Whether the party can reconcile these factions remains an open question, but James made clear she sees Mamdani's path as a dangerous gamble.
