President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are weighing whether to remove Kimberly Guilfoyle from her post as U.S. Ambassador to Greece, according to a senior U.S. official who spoke to the Associated Press on Sunday. The potential dismissal follows a series of explosive reports detailing alleged misconduct during her tenure in Athens.
The official said Trump and Rubio are "extremely pissed off" over Guilfoyle's actions, with a decision on her future potentially coming as soon as this week. Rubio, who visited Athens last week and received a warm welcome from Guilfoyle amid the controversy, is said to be particularly angered by the situation.
The federal government's watchdog is reportedly investigating allegations that Guilfoyle accepted gifts or favors from wealthy Greek businessmen. In addition, longtime Trump ally and MAGA donor Eric Deters accused her of asking him to wire $100,000 to pay her American Express bill ahead of her July 2025 Senate confirmation hearing, in exchange for access to top Trump administration officials.
"It won't show up anywhere if you wire money to American Express," Guilfoyle wrote in a Signal message to Deters on July 3, 2025, as first reported by The Wall Street Journal. Deters described the exchange as a "quid pro quo," claiming Guilfoyle offered to become his "ride or die in the Trump world" if he paid.
Trump briefly addressed the allegations on Friday, saying, "I just heard about it, too bad. I don't know too much, but she was always very nice." Guilfoyle has denied the accusations.
The Journal also reported that Guilfoyle boasted about connections to wealthy Greek businessmen who funded her luxury travel in exchange for using her diplomatic position to lobby on their behalf. In an audio recording reviewed by the Journal, she told an American businessman, "You know, I can deliver the world to you. Which you deserve. I'm going to make you a lot of f—ing money."
Guilfoyle, a former Fox News personality, was once married to California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and was later engaged to Donald Trump Jr. before their split in 2024. Her appointment to the ambassadorship was seen as a reward for her loyalty to the Trump family.
Rubio declined to comment on the allegations while in Greece, saying it was not his responsibility to "respond every time someone decides to give the media something without any advance warning." A spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Athens defended Guilfoyle, stating she has "faithfully followed State Department ethics and gift reporting guidelines."
The controversy has drawn scrutiny from top GOP lawmakers, with Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) flagging Guilfoyle's finance reports as 'very troubling'. The White House and State Department have not yet commented on the potential dismissal.
As the situation unfolds, it adds to a series of administration controversies, including Senate rebukes over a Russian diesel deal and bipartisan fury over that same deal. The outcome of Guilfoyle's case could signal how the administration handles ethics violations among its diplomatic corps.
