The wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was shot multiple times Sunday evening at the family's home in Ashburn, Virginia, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.

Mia Bieniemy, 57, is in stable condition at a local hospital after deputies responded to a residence on the 20000 block of Northpark Drive just after 7:30 p.m. She was found with multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said.

DNC's $2M Debt and Leadership Crisis Raise Alarm for 2026 Midterms
The Democratic National Committee is $2 million in debt and facing a leadership crisis under Ken Martin, with reports of a phone-throwing incident and questionable spending priorities.

Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, has been arrested and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. The suspect is the couple's son, according to multiple reports.

Eric Bieniemy, 56, was not at the home at the time of the incident. He is currently in St. Joseph, Missouri, with the Chiefs for training camp as the team prepares for the 2026 season.

The Chiefs released a statement saying they are "aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy's family" and, "Out of respect for their privacy, we won't have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them."

Bieniemy, a former All-American running back at the University of Colorado, has spent more than two decades as an NFL coach and coordinator. He served as offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders in 2023 before returning to Kansas City.

The shooting comes as the Sunday political talk shows were dominated by other national security issues, but the incident has drawn attention to the intersection of professional sports and family violence. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is expected to address the media on Monday.

Authorities have not released further details about the circumstances leading to the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.

Neighbors in the upscale Ashburn community, part of the broader Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, expressed shock at the incident. This is the latest high-profile case involving a family member of an NFL figure.

Eric Bieniemy has been a key figure in the Chiefs' offensive success, helping guide the team to multiple Super Bowl appearances. His professional future with the team remains uncertain as the legal process unfolds.
