President Donald Trump escalated his intra-party feud Saturday, threatening to rescind his endorsement of Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) after she appeared alongside Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) in Kentucky. In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump blasted Boebert as “weak-minded” and openly invited a primary challenger to step forward in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District.
“Boebert is campaigning for the Worst ‘Republican’ Congressman in the History of our Country, Thomas Massie, and anybody who can be that dumb deserves a good Primary fight!” Trump wrote, referring to Massie as “a disloyal, ungracious, and sanctimonious FOOL.”
The former president’s broadside comes as Massie faces a Tuesday primary against retired Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein, whom Trump has endorsed as “loyal, and MAGA all the way.” The Kentucky race has become a proxy battle testing Trump’s grip on the GOP, with Boebert and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) stumping for Massie. The Kentucky primary is a key test of Trump’s influence over the party’s base.
Boebert, a staunch Trump ally who has often voted with the president, opted to run in the safer 4th District after a crowded and expensive race emerged in her previous seat. The district, covering eastern Colorado, is rated solidly Republican by the Cook Political Report. The filing deadline passed in March, and state records show she is running unopposed in the June 30 GOP primary.
Despite her history of loyalty, tensions between Trump and Boebert have simmered since December, when she criticized his veto of a water infrastructure bill that would have served 50,000 people in southeastern Colorado. More recently, she joined Massie and two other Republicans in backing a discharge petition to force the release of Jeffrey Epstein files, a move that further irked Trump.
Boebert responded to Trump’s attacks on X, writing: “Yes, I saw the President’s post. No I’m not mad or offended. I knew the risks when I agreed to stand by my friend Thomas Massie. I was, and will be, America First, America Always, and MAGA.”
Trump’s displeasure extended to Paul, whom he described as “very difficult, and highly unreasonable.” In a separate post, Trump wrote: “Word is that Rand Paul and Lauren Boebert are right now in the Great Commonwealth of Kentucky, which I won by 31 points, parading around like fools for the Worst ‘Republican’ Congressman in the History of our Party!”
Trump’s threat to withdraw his endorsement marks a sharp turn for a president who has largely backed Boebert. Similar primary challenges against Trump critics have become a hallmark of his post-presidency strategy. Whether a credible challenger emerges in Colorado remains uncertain, but the episode underscores the fragile alliances within the MAGA coalition.
