President Donald Trump launched a sharp attack on what he called 'Communists' early Wednesday, after several candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani secured victories in key House primary races. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote, 'America the Beautiful will NEVER be a Communist Country!!!'
The winners include democratic socialists Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier, as well as progressive Brad Lander, a former opponent of the mayor. Trump has repeatedly and inaccurately conflated democratic socialism with communism, particularly during his own campaign, where he derided Mamdani as an '100% Communist Lunatic' and claimed his policies are 'destroying New York.'
Political analysts note that democratic socialism and communism are distinct ideologies. While communism advocates for collective ownership of property, democratic socialism focuses on government investment in workers and public services, according to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
In a separate Truth Social post later Wednesday, Trump specifically targeted Mamdani: 'Mayor Mamdani pulled through 3 solid Communists, and has received loud and universal applause from the Fake News Media. Congratulations Mr. Mayor!'
Trump also highlighted his own endorsement record, boasting of a 16-0 win record in Tuesday's primaries, including races in South Carolina. 'Over the last two years, my endorsement has netted 259 Primary WINS, and almost no losses, with Zero media attention!!!' he wrote.
The New York City chapter of the DSA celebrated the victories, with the state party declaring on social media after Chevalier ousted incumbent Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat: 'SOCIALISM WINS UPTOWN!' Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a leading figure in the democratic socialist movement, praised Lander's and Valdez's 'landslide victories' and said, 'Together, we are creating a grassroots progressive movement that will defeat the Oligarchs.'
The primary outcomes deepen existing Democratic divisions, as progressive candidates gain ground in a city already grappling with internal party strife. Meanwhile, Trump continues to leverage the results to paint Democrats as extreme, even as his own party faces its own fractures over fiscal policy and defense spending, as seen in recent clashes with GOP fiscal conservatives over a $1.5 trillion defense and Iran war funding push.
