Former President Donald Trump has thrown his weight behind Representative Andy Barr in the Republican primary to fill the Senate seat being vacated by retiring Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. In a lengthy post on his Truth Social platform Friday evening, Trump described Barr as a “100% solid American Patriot” and the only candidate capable of holding the seat for the GOP in what he called a critical election.
“Andy is the only Candidate who will easily defeat the Democrat in what will be one of the most important Elections in American History,” Trump wrote. He added, “He will help ensure Victory against these Radical Left, Country Destroying, THUGS.” The former president concluded with a full-throated endorsement: “Andy Barr has my Complete and Total Endorsement to be the next United States Senator from Kentucky – HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”
Trump Clears the Field
Barr, who has represented Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District since 2013, entered the Senate race last April. The endorsement immediately reshaped the primary. In a separate Truth Social post Friday, Trump called on one of Barr’s opponents, businessman Nate Morris, to drop out and instead join his administration as a U.S. ambassador.
Morris, a wealthy entrepreneur and friend of Vice President JD Vance who had received substantial campaign contributions from Elon Musk, quickly announced his withdrawal. “When President Trump asks you to serve your nation, you answer the call,” Morris wrote on social media. “I am incredibly proud to be a part of the Trump Administration, representing Kentucky and America on the global stage and fighting for the America First agenda.”
In a subsequent post, Morris urged his supporters to back Barr. “I’m incredibly proud to join President Trump in endorsing @BarrForSenate,” he wrote. “Like President Trump said, Andy knows what it takes to get things done and deliver BIG for the America First agenda. It’s time for all Kentuckians to rally behind our next Senator, Andy Barr!”
Remaining Challenger
With Morris out, the only remaining opponent in the May 19 GOP primary is former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron. Cameron, who was McConnell’s protégé and lost the 2023 gubernatorial race to Democrat Andy Beshear, now faces an uphill battle against a Trump-backed candidate. McConnell, who announced his retirement last February after more than four decades in the Senate, has not endorsed anyone in the race.
Barr’s campaign is now positioned as the clear frontrunner, with Trump’s endorsement likely to consolidate conservative support. The primary will test whether Trump’s influence remains decisive in intraparty contests, especially in a state where he won by wide margins in both 2016 and 2020.
The race has drawn national attention as a bellwether for the GOP’s direction post-McConnell. Barr, a reliable conservative vote, has emphasized his alignment with Trump’s agenda, while Cameron has touted his own record as attorney general. With Trump’s backing, Barr is expected to carry significant momentum into the general election, where the seat is considered safely Republican.
Meanwhile, the broader political landscape continues to shift. A recent Pew poll found that 56% of Americans say federal ethics have declined under Trump’s second term, while GOP leaders have clashed with Democrats over the Iran war powers deadline, highlighting the ongoing partisan battles in Washington.
