Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are set to tie the knot this week at Madison Square Garden, a two-day celebration that has already drawn political controversy over the cost of police protection. The couple, who announced their engagement in August, have kept details under wraps, but public records and city officials have confirmed the event, which some are calling an American royal wedding.
The wedding festivities include a private rehearsal dinner Thursday at the Infosys Theater inside the Garden for 100 guests, followed by a cocktail party Friday with over 1,000 attendees running until 4 a.m. Saturday. Parts of West 31st and West 33rd streets will be closed, and 130 police officers will be on patrol, according to an internal NYPD memo obtained by the New York Post.
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch acknowledged the event at a press conference, saying, “The NYPD will of course have a detail in place, but I’m not going to go into more specifics at this time.” Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a Democrat, noted the sweltering summer heat and quipped, “If you happen to be getting married at Madison Square Garden, you will be staying inside and you will be staying cool.”
The security measures have sparked backlash from Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.), who argued on social media that Swift and Kelce should reimburse the city for the police presence. “Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce should reimburse NYPD for the 130 officers needed per day to keep their multi-million dollar, thousand person wedding at MSG safe,” she wrote. “Our officers are already working overtime for 4th of July festivities & NYC taxpayers should NOT be on the hook.” This echoes broader debates about public funding for private events, similar to GOP Rep. Malliotakis's push for the couple to cover NYPD wedding costs.
The couple donated $26 million to 20 charities, including some in New York, ahead of the wedding, according to the Associated Press. The guest list is expected to include A-list celebrities, musicians, athletes, and close friends, with some of Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs teammates reportedly booking hotel rooms in Manhattan.
Swift and Kelce’s relationship became public in 2023 after Kelce attended one of her “Eras Tour” shows in Kansas City. He later revealed he planned to give her a friendship bracelet with his phone number. Swift became a regular at Chiefs games, and the couple announced their engagement in August after two years of dating.
The choice of Madison Square Garden, an 820,000-square-foot arena, offers advantages like air conditioning during the city’s heatwave. But the event has also drawn comparisons to other high-profile weddings and sparked discussions about celebrity influence on city resources. The no-phone policy for guests, vendors, and security, reported by ABC, underscores the couple’s desire for privacy.
As the city prepares for Fourth of July festivities, the wedding adds another layer of logistical challenges. Mayor Mamdani urged New Yorkers to “stay inside and stay cool,” a message that also applies to the wedding party. The political fallout over security costs is likely to continue, especially as other lawmakers weigh in on the use of public funds for private celebrations.
