PETERSBURG, Va. — A 19-year-old man is in custody after a shooting that left five people injured outside the dormitories at Virginia State University early Saturday morning, according to authorities.

Chesterfield County Police responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 1:28 a.m. on Aug. 15. Upon arrival, officers discovered five individuals suffering from gunshot wounds near the university's residential halls. One victim, a 21-year-old man who is not a student, was initially reported to have life-threatening injuries and has since been upgraded to critical condition.

Investigators identified 19-year-old Camron Harris as the suspect. Harris, who is not enrolled at the university, was located later that afternoon in Seward Hall on campus, where police said they found him hiding in a closet. He was taken into custody around 4 p.m. and transported to Chesterfield County Jail.

Harris now faces eight felony warrants: four counts of malicious wounding and four counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is being held without bond.
