The Secret Service confirmed Monday that a person was shot by law enforcement near the National Mall, triggering a swift emergency response and the immediate evacuation of reporters from the White House North Lawn.
The incident unfolded at the intersection of 15th Street and Independence Avenue, just south of the Washington Monument. In a post on the social media platform X, the Secret Service stated: “One individual was shot by law enforcement; their condition is currently unknown.” The agency urged the public to avoid the area as emergency crews responded.
The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The shooting occurred roughly a mile from the White House grounds, and it remains unclear whether the event was connected to the White House or President Trump, who was on site delivering remarks at a Small Business Summit.
Reporters working on the North Lawn were quickly escorted inside and sheltered in the briefing room as a precaution. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) later declared the scene secure, writing on X: “MPD is on scene of this investigation at 15th Street and Independence Ave, SW. The scene is secure.” Police added that roads would be closed for several hours and promised further updates as information is confirmed.
The shooting comes just over a week after a man armed with a handgun, shotgun, and knives breached security during the White House Correspondents’ Association annual dinner. That individual is suspected of plotting an assassination attempt against Trump, according to law enforcement sources. The Secret Service and Trump have both dismissed suggestions that the earlier incident involved friendly fire.
The heightened tensions follow a series of security breaches around the president. Last month, a man was arrested after a scuffle with Secret Service agents at Trump’s Doral golf club in Florida. Meanwhile, the administration continues to face scrutiny over its national security posture, including the controversial decision to pull 5,000 troops from Germany, which drew sharp criticism from GOP Armed Services Committee leaders.
As the investigation into Monday’s shooting continues, authorities have not released the identity or condition of the individual who was shot. The incident adds to a growing list of security challenges for the Secret Service, which has faced increased pressure to protect the president in an environment of elevated threats.
