Jake Reiner, the eldest son of legendary filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, has broken his silence in a deeply personal Substack post, describing the aftermath of their violent deaths as a “living nightmare.” The couple was found stabbed to death in their Southern California home in December, and their son Nick Reiner has been charged with their murders.

In a post titled “Mom and Dad,” Jake Reiner wrote that he still wakes each morning having to convince himself the tragedy is real. “My world, as I knew it, had collapsed,” he said, recounting the phone call from his sister Romy on December 14 informing him of their parents’ deaths. He added, “This truly is my living nightmare.”

The actor, writer, and producer lamented the future milestones his parents will miss. “My parents won’t be at my wedding, they won’t get to hold their future grandchild, and they won’t get to see me have the successful career I’m still seeking,” he wrote. “It simultaneously breaks my heart and enrages me.”

Jake Reiner also reflected on the fear his parents must have felt in their final moments. “They were the last people in the world to deserve what happened to them,” he wrote. “They deserved to be loved, they deserved to be respected, and above all, they deserved to be appreciated for how much they gave to all three of us and to the world.”

The couple’s bodies were discovered by their daughter, Romy, after she found them in their home. According to documents from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, the Reiners died within minutes of suffering “multiple sharp force injuries” from a knife. Nick Reiner, the couple’s son, was arrested and jailed without bail. In February, he pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, and his preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 29.

Jake Reiner also struggled to process his brother’s alleged involvement. He wrote that he and his sister lost most of their family that night in “the most violent way imaginable,” but having Nick “be at the center of it. It’s almost too impossible to process.”

He closed his post by asking for “love and compassion” as he and his sister navigate the ordeal. The case has drawn widespread attention, with many in the political and entertainment worlds expressing shock. For those following the intersection of personal tragedy and public life, the Reiner family’s story underscores the profound toll of such violence.
