Los Angeles County prosecutors have formally withdrawn the death penalty as a possible sentence for Nick Reiner, the 39-year-old son of director Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, who is accused of stabbing the couple to death in their Brentwood home in late 2025.
District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the decision on Tuesday, stating that the maximum penalty Reiner could now receive, if convicted, is life in prison without the possibility of parole. Hochman said he consulted with Reiner's siblings before making the call to remove capital punishment from consideration.
The case has drawn significant public attention due to the prominence of the victims. Rob Reiner was a celebrated actor and director known for films such as When Harry Met Sally and A Few Good Men, as well as a longtime political activist. Michele Singer Reiner was a documentary filmmaker and producer.
Nick Reiner was indicted by a grand jury last month on two counts of first-degree murder, with a special circumstance allegation of lying in wait. That enhancement, which can elevate the penalty to life without parole, will still be pursued. The grand jury indictment bypasses a preliminary hearing, moving the case more swiftly toward trial.
Hochman emphasized that the decision to drop the death penalty was not a reflection of the evidence but rather a policy choice. “After careful consideration and discussion with the family, I have determined that life without the possibility of parole is the appropriate and just outcome in this case,” he said in a statement.
Nick Reiner has pleaded not guilty to both counts. He remains held without bail. According to court documents, the couple died from “multiple sharp force injuries” inflicted with a knife, and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health concluded they died within minutes of the attack.
The couple was discovered by their daughter after they failed to respond to contact. The killings sent shockwaves through Hollywood and the political world, where Rob Reiner was a prominent Democratic voice and a close ally of the Obama and Clinton families.
At the Emmy Awards on Monday night, actress Jamie Lee Curtis paid tribute to Rob Reiner, who posthumously won the award for outstanding guest actor in a comedy series for his role on The Bear. “He was generous and kind and funny as hell and a friend to all,” Curtis said during the ceremony.
Nick Reiner, who had lived with his parents, had previously spoken publicly about his struggles with drug addiction and homelessness. He co-wrote a film inspired by his relationship with his father, which added a layer of poignancy to the tragedy.
The case now moves to trial, where the prosecution will seek a conviction on the murder charges and the special circumstance.
