QUEENS, N.Y. — A bizarre incident in the Astoria neighborhood has left residents and local officials baffled after three men were captured on surveillance footage removing a manhole cover and descending into the city’s sewer system. The video, recorded in early May, shows the trio working together with an unknown tool to lift the heavy cover, then one by one climbing down into the darkness below.
The footage, obtained from Aki Autocare, a local auto shop, shows a white vehicle pulling up and positioning its headlights to illuminate the scene. The men, dressed in overalls and carrying flashlights, appear to move with purpose. The last person inside the manhole pulls the cover back into place, and the white vehicle drives away.
Aki Jakupovic, owner of the shop, told reporters he couldn’t guess what the group was doing underground but expressed concern. “They were dressed like the Mario Brothers,” he said, referencing the video game characters. “They had overalls on. … Very strange.” Jakupovic added that he worries they were “up to no good.”
The incident has sparked alarm among Astoria residents, who are demanding answers from city officials. Local community boards have raised questions about potential infrastructure tampering, illegal dumping, or even unauthorized surveillance operations. The New York Police Department has confirmed it is reviewing the footage and investigating the matter.
This comes as New York City continues to grapple with aging infrastructure and public safety concerns. The sewer system, which is managed by the Department of Environmental Protection, has been a focal point of maintenance debates, but unauthorized entry is rare. The incident echoes broader concerns about security and oversight in critical urban systems.
In related news, the U.S. government recently mandated Ebola screening at Dulles Airport for travelers from three African nations, highlighting ongoing vigilance against potential threats. Meanwhile, a bipartisan bill aims to boost clinical trial access for underserved groups, reflecting broader efforts to address systemic vulnerabilities.
Authorities have not yet identified the individuals or the vehicle. The NYPD urges anyone with information to come forward. The incident remains under investigation, and officials have not ruled out the possibility of criminal activity.
For now, Astoria residents are left with more questions than answers, watching their streets with a new wariness. As one local put it, “You never know what’s going on beneath your feet.”
