First Lady Melania Trump waded into the contentious debate over transgender athletes on Tuesday, endorsing the Supreme Court's decision to allow states to ban transgender girls from competing on girls' and women's school sports teams while also affirming support for LGBTQ+ rights.

In a post on X, the social platform, Trump said, “America, we can support the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community and also protect opportunities for female athletes. Respect everyone and keep girls’ sports fair. Both ideals are essential.” The statement came hours after the Court’s 6-3 ruling upheld bans in Idaho and West Virginia.

Gallup: Ukrainian Approval of US Leadership Plummets to 7% as War Grinds On
A new Gallup poll shows just 7% of Ukrainians approve of US leadership, down from 66% in 2022, as the Russia-Ukraine war continues and Trump's mediation falters.

The decision, written by Justice Brett Kavanaugh, rejected arguments that such restrictions amount to unconstitutional sex or gender identity discrimination. “In other words, may schools determine eligibility for women’s and girls’ sports based on biological sex? The answer is yes,” Kavanaugh wrote. “Consistent with Title IX and the Equal Protection Clause, we hold that the States may maintain women’s and girls’ sports for biological females.”

The ruling marks a significant victory for conservative lawmakers who have pushed to restrict transgender participation in athletics, part of a broader effort to limit gender-affirming care and other rights. The American Civil Liberties Union, a left-leaning advocacy group, condemned the decision, posting on Bluesky that it is “devastating for trans students across the country who simply want the freedom to play with their friends.”

Melania Trump’s comments represent a rare foray into policy from the typically reserved first lady. By pairing support for the transgender athlete ban with a call for LGBTQ+ rights, she attempted to strike a middle ground in a deeply polarized debate. Her position aligns with some moderate voices who argue that protecting female sports does not require opposing broader LGBTQ+ protections.

This nuanced stance contrasts with the more aggressive rhetoric from some on the right. In a related development, Justice Clarence Thomas labeled transgender identity a 'lie' in a separate concurrence, highlighting deep ideological divisions on the Court. Meanwhile, the White House has faced scrutiny over other matters, including a $500 million no-bid ballroom contract awarded to a Trump-linked builder, drawing criticism from Democrats.

The Supreme Court’s ruling is expected to embolden other states considering similar legislation. At least 20 states already have laws restricting transgender athletes, and the decision could accelerate further action. The White House has not yet commented on the ruling, but President Trump has previously voiced support for such bans.

As the cultural and legal battle continues, Melania Trump’s intervention underscores the complexity of the issue, even within Republican circles. Whether her call for balancing rights will gain traction remains uncertain, but it has already sparked debate among advocates on both sides.
