A routine House hearing on sanctuary city policies devolved into a fiery confrontation Tuesday between Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) and Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), with both lawmakers shouting over each other before Lawler was forced to yield his time and exit the room.

The clash erupted after Lawler, who appeared before the panel to introduce a witness, used his opening remarks to denounce sanctuary city policies, claiming that jurisdictions like New York and Chicago flout federal law and protect criminals. Committee members quickly interrupted, reminding him that his role was limited to introducing the witness, not delivering a political broadside.

Gallup: Ukrainian Approval of US Leadership Plummets to 7% as War Grinds On
A new Gallup poll shows just 7% of Ukrainians approve of US leadership, down from 66% in 2022, as the Russia-Ukraine war continues and Trump's mediation falters.

Lawler pressed on, invoking the murder of his constituent, 18-year-old Sheridan Gorman, who he said was killed by an undocumented immigrant that the Biden administration could have apprehended and deported before the attack. As the room grew tense, Lawler accused Democrats of failing to act and insisted that introducing the victim's mother—his witness—was necessary to highlight the human cost of lax enforcement.

The exchange escalated when Lawler directly challenged Raskin, suggesting the Maryland Democrat did not share the same outrage over Gorman's death as he did over other high-profile cases. Raskin shot back, “I do feel that outrage!” Lawler then called Raskin a “disgrace” and pointed his finger, prompting Raskin to retort, “You don’t belong on this committee, you should get the hell out of here! You don’t understand the rules of this committee, you don’t understand the Constitution, you’re full of it.”

The committee condemned Lawler’s “outrageous outburst,” and after yielding his time, the New York Republican left the hearing. The incident underscores deepening partisan divisions over immigration enforcement, a flashpoint in Congress as lawmakers debate border security and sanctuary city policies. Lawler has previously broken with his party on immigration issues, such as when he warned of a healthcare crisis over Haitian TPS, but Tuesday’s display showed no willingness to compromise.

The hearing, part of a broader Republican push to crack down on sanctuary jurisdictions, also featured debates over data accuracy and constitutional authority. In a separate hearing earlier this month, another GOP lawmaker clashed with Democrats over immigration figures, highlighting the persistent friction. Meanwhile, Raskin has been a vocal critic of Trump-era policies, recently forcing a showdown over a $1.8 billion fund he called an “anti-weaponization” slush fund.

The shouting match is likely to fuel further partisan recriminations as both parties seek to frame the immigration debate ahead of the 2024 elections. For now, the image of two lawmakers screaming at each other over a teenager’s death captures the raw emotion and political stakes of the issue.
