Kurt Busch, the older brother of NASCAR icon Kyle Busch, issued a heartfelt statement Monday, more than two weeks after the racing world was stunned by Kyle's death at age 39.
In an Instagram post, Kurt thanked fans and the racing community for their support since his brother's passing on May 21, and reflected on their shared journey from childhood to the pinnacle of motorsports.
“From big wheels to competing on the biggest stages in motorsports, we were more than just fierce competitors. We pushed each other, challenged each other, and learned from each other,” Kurt wrote. He added that his heart is broken but expressed gratitude for the impact Kyle had on him and countless others.
A Legacy Unmatched in NASCAR
Kyle Busch retires as the winningest driver in NASCAR history, with 234 victories across all three national series. His 69 wins in the Truck Series stand as the most of any driver, and he captured the O'Reilly Series championship in 2009. In the Cup Series, he earned two championships and two regular-season titles.
Known as “Rowdy” and “The Wild Thing,” Busch was a polarizing figure who relished riling up rivals and fans alike. His aggressive style and unapologetic demeanor built a legacy that will not soon be forgotten.
Cause of Death: Sepsis from Pneumonia
According to his death certificate, obtained by The Associated Press in Mecklenburg County, Busch died from hemorrhagic shock and disseminated intravascular coagulation following complications from bacterial pneumonia that led to sepsis. The certificate notes he had experienced symptoms of bacterial pneumonia for “days to weeks” before sepsis set in. The manner of death was ruled natural. He was cremated in Mooresville, N.C., after an autopsy.
Busch's death has prompted broader discussions about sepsis awareness and healthcare access, even as the political landscape sees debates over speed-limiting technology and other public safety measures.
