The closure stems from a packed schedule of military flyovers, aerial performances, and a massive fireworks display over the National Mall. Practice flyovers forced a temporary airspace shutdown on Friday, and the official July 4 itinerary includes near-continuous air shows from 1:14 p.m. to 8:22 p.m., according to a White House official.
President Trump is slated to take the stage at 9:45 p.m. for what he has billed as “the most spectacular TRUMP RALLY of them all.” Despite extreme heat warnings — with temperatures forecast to hit 102°F and heat index values reaching 113°F, per the National Weather Service — Trump confirmed earlier this week he still intends to deliver lengthy remarks ahead of the fireworks.
The scorching weather has already disrupted several planned events. The Great American State Fair, a 16-day showcase on the National Mall organized by a White House commission, temporarily closed Friday after 44 people sought medical attention for heat-related illnesses. Its Saturday opening was delayed by two hours due to the heat. The National Park Service also canceled its annual Independence Day parade in the capital.
The airspace restrictions come amid broader political divides over the celebration. A recent poll shows Republican women less enthusiastic about America's 250th, while another survey found only 45% of Democrats feel pride in American citizenship. Meanwhile, the Great American State Fair pressed on despite thin crowds and searing heat, underscoring the administration's determination to mark the milestone.
Travelers flying through DCA should expect significant delays and cancellations throughout the holiday weekend. The airport authority urged passengers to contact their airlines for rebooking options. With the airspace closed for nearly 12 hours and terminal capacity slashed, the July 4th ground stop is one of the most extensive ever imposed at the busy airport.
