JetBlue is once again raising its checked-bag fees, marking the second increase in less than a year. The airline's website now shows that for flights booked after November 3, passengers will pay $50 to check a first bag on off-peak flights within the U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean, or Canada. During peak travel times, that fee climbs to $55. A second bag will cost $70 off-peak and $75 at peak times.

The new pricing applies only to travelers who pay for their bags at least 24 hours before departure. Those who wait until within a day of their flight will face steeper charges: $60 for the first bag off-peak and $70 on peak flights, with second bags at $75 and $85 respectively.

Markets Rally as Democrats Sweep Congress, Fueling Divided-Government Bets
Stock futures jumped after Democrats swept the midterms, with investors betting on divided government. But AI crackdown threats and oil volatility could reverse gains.

This latest adjustment represents a significant jump from the fees JetBlue introduced just months ago, in late March. Previously, the first checked bag started at $39 (or $49 at peak) and a second at $59 (or $69 at peak). The airline had already cited rising fuel costs as a driver of that earlier increase.

In a statement, a JetBlue spokesperson said: “We’re adjusting checked bag fees to help offset rising fuel and operating costs. This helps us keep our base fares competitive while giving customers the choice to pay for a checked bag only if they need one.” The carrier also pointed to the ongoing impact of higher oil prices, a trend that has been exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, as energy costs surge across the economy.

JetBlue continues to allow one carry-on bag and one personal item at no extra charge. The airline is urging customers to add checked bags to their bookings early to avoid the higher fees applied within 24 hours of departure. It is also maintaining fee waivers for certain passengers, including those with JetBlue-branded credit cards and members of its TrueBlue Mosaic loyalty program.

“JetBlue Plus, JetBlue Business and JetBlue Premier Cardmembers will continue to receive their first checked bag free for the primary Cardmember and up to three travel companions when using their card to book JetBlue flights,” the airline said. “TrueBlue Mosaic members will also continue to enjoy one free checked bag for Mosaic 1, and two free checked bags for Mosaic 2, 3 and 4.”

JetBlue is not alone in raising bag fees in 2026. Around the same time as its March increase—and amid rising oil prices since the start of the war in Iran—several major U.S. carriers, including Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines, all hiked their checked-bag charges for the average traveler.

These fee increases come as airlines face mounting cost pressures, with fuel expenses being a primary driver. The moves also reflect a broader industry trend of unbundling ancillary services, allowing carriers to keep base fares competitive while generating additional revenue from optional services like checked baggage.

For frequent flyers, the latest increase may prompt a reassessment of loyalty programs and credit card benefits, as the value of free checked bags becomes more significant. For occasional travelers, the new fees add another layer of cost to air travel, which has already seen rising ticket prices due to inflation and supply chain disruptions.

As the industry adjusts to these economic realities, passengers are advised to plan ahead and consider their baggage needs carefully. Booking bags in advance can save money, but for those who prefer flexibility, the higher last-minute fees may be an unavoidable expense.
