Christina Hines, a former special victims prosecutor, has secured the Democratic nomination in Michigan's 10th Congressional District, according to Decision Desk HQ projections. She will face Republican Mike Bouchard in November in a race that both parties see as pivotal for control of the House.
The seat became an open contest after incumbent Rep. John James (R-Mich.) chose to run for governor, leaving the Macomb County-based district without a sitting representative for the first time since its 2022 redraw. That vacancy has turned the district into a top target for both national parties, with significant spending and high-profile endorsements already in play.
Hines emerged from a three-way Democratic primary that included Eric Chung, a former Commerce Department official, and Tim Greimel, a former state House minority leader. Despite raising less money than her rivals, Hines entered primary day with a substantial lead in a poll commissioned by EMILY's List, which backed her candidacy. She also carried strong local credentials, earning endorsements from Macomb County elected officials and Carl Marlinga, the Democratic nominee in the district in 2022 and 2024.
On the Republican side, Bouchard—an Army veteran and son of Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard—won the nomination after receiving early backing from former President Trump and House Republican leadership in June. His campaign is expected to lean into the district's recent Republican tilt, where Trump won by 1 point in 2020 and by 7 points in 2024.
The Cook Political Report rates the general election as "lean Republican," but analysts note the race remains highly competitive given the open seat and Hines's prosecutorial background. Hines has stressed her work on special victims cases, while Bouchard has emphasized his military service and conservative platform.
Michigan is hosting several other closely watched House contests this cycle. In the 7th District, Democrat Lawrence's upset win sets up a challenge to Rep. Tom Barrett (R). The 4th District also features a competitive matchup, with Huizenga securing the GOP nod against Democrat Jessica McCann. Meanwhile, the open governor's race between Benson and James is drawing national attention and could affect down-ballot turnout.
Hines's campaign has signaled it will focus on economic issues, healthcare access, and public safety, while Bouchard is likely to hammer inflation and border security.
