Former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) launched a blistering attack on President Donald Trump Tuesday after he posted a comparative tally of American military deaths across several wars, including the ongoing conflict with Iran. Greene, once a staunch Trump ally, called the post “stupid” and accused the president of boasting about the loss of U.S. troops.
Trump’s Tuesday afternoon message on Truth Social listed death tolls from the Afghanistan, Iraq, Vietnam, and Korean wars, then added: “Venezuela War: 1 day, 0 DEAD. Iran Military Conflict: 4 months, 18 DEAD.” The post appeared to highlight the relatively low number of U.S. fatalities in the Iran campaign, which is approaching its fifth month.
Greene responded on X, formerly Twitter, writing: “Trump is bragging about killing 18 US soldiers. That’s how I read this stupid post. The ‘peace president’ went to war and is killing and wounding our troops.” She ended her post with the acronym “GFY,” standing for “go fuck yourself.”
The sharp rebuke marks a deepening rift between Greene and Trump, who she previously defended vigorously. She has increasingly criticized the administration’s handling of the Iran war, which has become a political liability amid rising gas prices and public discontent. According to AAA, the average U.S. gas price has climbed to about $4.06 per gallon, up from roughly $3.15 a year ago.
Greene’s criticism extended to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over the weekend. Hegseth posted on X commemorating U.S. service members killed in Jordan by Iranian strikes, writing: “Godspeed, heroes. Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve.” Greene fired back, calling the word “sacrifice” inappropriate. “They did not willingly sacrifice themselves. They were killed because of the war you, Trump, and the admin, are waging on behalf of a FOREIGN COUNTRY, Israel,” she wrote.
The Iran conflict has strained the U.S. economy and international relations, with recent polling showing the war is unpopular with the American public. Trump has also threatened to bomb Iranian infrastructure, including bridges and power plants, in response to attacks on the Strait of Hormuz.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Greene’s Tuesday post. The Hill has reached out for further clarification.
This is not the first time Greene has broken with Trump on the Iran war. She previously criticized Trump for attending the transfer of troops killed in the renewed conflict, and has accused the administration of prioritizing foreign interests over American lives. The former congresswoman’s shift underscores the growing unease among some Republicans over the direction of U.S. military engagement in the Middle East.
