The White House on Tuesday accused Maryland Governor Wes Moore (D) of "throwing a tantrum" after a source familiar with the matter said the governor was barred from speaking at an event announcing a major investment in a Baltimore shipyard. The event, which featured President Donald Trump, was held to unveil a $3.7 billion project by defense contractor Anduril to build a new facility at Sparrows Point, Baltimore, for manufacturing Virginia-class submarine components.
A White House official, speaking to The Hill ahead of the event, said President Trump is "willing to work with anyone to revitalize our manufacturing sector," noting that the governor was "graciously invited" to attend as a guest. The official added, "It's unfortunate that the Governor is now making a multi-billion-dollar announcement about himself by throwing a tantrum over an announcement that will bring sorely needed jobs back to his state thanks to President Trump."
Moore, who has been floated as a potential Democratic 2028 presidential contender, has a history of sparring with Trump. His spokesperson responded, "Governor Moore has always said he will work with anyone when it comes to delivering for Marylanders but bow to no one when it comes to standing up for them." The spokesperson also welcomed Anduril's investment, stating, "The governor is proud to welcome Anduril to Baltimore County and the thousands of permanent jobs this investment is bringing to our state."
During a call with reporters, a senior administration official said $2.9 billion of the funding for the facility would come from the Pentagon, with the administration expecting the investment to be processed through the regular budget process. The project is expected to create thousands of jobs and is touted as the largest private investment in Maryland in over a decade.
In a statement, Moore celebrated the project's economic impact, saying it "will deliver the largest private investment and create the most jobs in Maryland in over a decade — driving billions of dollars in economic activity that will boost Maryland families not just in Baltimore County, but throughout the state." He also highlighted the potential for advanced training and high-skilled maritime manufacturing jobs.
The clash over the event underscores the ongoing friction between the Trump administration and Democratic governors, particularly in states that are key to national defense. This is not the first time Moore and Trump have clashed; they have previously disagreed on issues ranging from immigration to federal funding. The administration's decision to block Moore from speaking, while inviting him as a guest, appears to be part of a broader pattern of political maneuvering.
Analysts suggest that the White House's sharp rebuke could be aimed at undermining Moore's political standing, especially as he is considered a rising star in the Democratic Party. However, Moore's response, emphasizing collaboration without capitulation, is likely to resonate with his supporters.
The submarine shipyard investment is part of a larger effort to bolster the U.S. Navy's submarine production, which has faced delays and capacity constraints. The new facility is expected to enhance the production of Virginia-class submarines, a key component of the Navy's undersea warfare capabilities.
As the political fallout continues, the event itself highlights the intersection of defense policy and partisan politics, a theme that is likely to persist as the 2028 election cycle approaches.
