A major study published by the American Academy of Neurology has found that popular low- and no-calorie sweeteners may be linked to a significant acceleration in memory loss and decline in thinking skills. The research, which analyzed data from nearly 13,000 adults, shows that heavy consumers of these sugar substitutes experienced a 62% faster rate of cognitive decline compared to those who consumed the least.

Dr. Claudia Kimie Suemoto of the University of São Paulo, the study's lead author, noted that while these sweeteners are often marketed as a healthier alternative to sugar, the findings suggest they may carry hidden risks for brain health over time. The study examined seven common sweeteners—aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame K, erythritol, xylitol, sorbitol, and tagatose—all of which contain few or no calories.

The association was particularly pronounced among participants with diabetes, a group that frequently uses artificial sweeteners as sugar substitutes. Even among middle-aged adults without diabetes, those in the mid-range consumption group showed cognitive decline 35% faster than the lowest-consumption group. Participants underwent cognitive assessments at the beginning, midpoint, and end of the study to track changes over time.

These findings add to a growing body of evidence about the potential health impacts of artificial sweeteners. For instance, a separate Cambridge study found that common sweeteners can disrupt key gut bacteria growth, which may have broader implications for overall health. The new research suggests that the effects on brain function could be another dimension of concern.

Sweeteners are ubiquitous in ultra-processed foods and beverages, and many are sold separately for use in coffee, tea, cooking, and baking. As the nation grapples with an affordability crisis—with 95% of Americans saying the country is in one—consumers may turn to these cheaper alternatives without being aware of the potential cognitive trade-offs.

The study's authors emphasize that while the link is strong, more research is needed to establish causation and understand the mechanisms behind the association. However, for policymakers and health advocates, the findings raise new questions about the long-term safety of these widely used additives, especially for vulnerable populations such as diabetics and older adults.
