Comedian Jon Stewart declared Monday that President Trump experienced what he called his “worst nightmare” during a contentious Meet the Press interview on NBC News, where the president abruptly removed his microphone and walked off set.
Stewart, on his The Daily Show broadcast, dissected the exchange between Trump and host Kristen Welker. The confrontation escalated when Welker challenged Trump’s repeated false assertions that the 2020 election was rigged against him. Trump tried to draw parallels between that loss to former President Biden and the ongoing California gubernatorial primary.
Stewart described the interview’s trajectory as starting with a “reasonable question, ridiculous answer” about the war in Iran. But the tone shifted sharply, he said, when “we get to a moment when the heartland, rainswept rom-com becomes a man trapped in a barn with his worst nightmare, a woman who won’t stop asking pertinent questions.”
The comedian mocked Trump’s claim that he did not campaign on starting new wars, juxtaposing it with clips from the 2024 campaign trail where the president repeatedly vowed the U.S. would avoid foreign entanglements. Stewart noted that “this reporter on this day had the temerity to mention to Donald Trump that, well, actually, he did say that all the time. She just lit the fuse on the bulls— bomb.”
Stewart then highlighted Trump’s pivot to 2020 election fraud claims as a “fail-safe—in case of journalism, break glass. The EpiPen in case you’ve been stung by reality.” But this time, Stewart said with a laugh, “his fail-safe failed to save.” The president could have acknowledged that courts have uniformly rejected his fraud allegations, Stewart suggested, “or he could do his second option: smoke bomb,” referring to Trump’s exit.
During the interview, Welker pressed Trump for evidence that California’s gubernatorial race was rigged. Trump replied that all he needed “to do was look,” accused state election officials of being “crooked,” and complained about the slow ballot-counting process. He then called Welker and her show “crooked,” prompting her to push back. After Trump said, “Let’s call it quits because I’ve had enough,” he removed his microphone and dropped it to the ground.
Stewart concluded that “Donald Trump didn’t storm out because of the rain. He stormed out because he was challenged, not because he was distracted. So maybe it’s time we stop making excuses for that man in order to preserve access to his constant bulls—.”
The interview occurred before former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra (D) was the first candidate called in the California gubernatorial race to advance to the November general election. It wasn’t until Monday that Trump’s endorsed candidate, former Fox News commentator Steve Hilton (R), was projected to advance to the November runoff, according to Decision Desk HQ.
This episode comes amid broader tensions between the Trump administration and the media. In a related development, the Kennedy Center was ordered to drop Trump’s name from its website after a court ruling, and Trump has escalated attacks on federal judges blocking his policies, such as the H-1B visa fee hike. The president has also faced criticism from retired federal judges over what they called a “fraudulent” IRS settlement.
