Federal immigration authorities confirmed the death of a 41-year-old Salvadoran man who had been held at a privately run detention center in Newark, New Jersey. The incident has reignited criticism over conditions at the facility and the broader oversight of ICE detention operations.
In a statement provided to NewsNation, ICE identified the deceased as Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, who was pronounced dead on Aug. 1 at University Hospital in Newark. The agency said he experienced a medical emergency while in custody at the Delaney Hall Detention Facility, with the official cause of death still pending further examination.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka (D) condemned the death, calling it a “heartbreaking reminder” of what he described as a facility operating without adequate oversight, accountability, or transparency. In a post on X, Baraka expressed sympathy for the family and reiterated his long-standing criticism of Delaney Hall.
New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill (D) also weighed in, saying she was “deeply disturbed” by the news and that her administration is working with the state’s congressional delegation to gather all relevant facts. Sherrill pledged to seek answers for the family and the public.
The death comes just two months after New Jersey filed a lawsuit against The GEO Group, the private operator of Delaney Hall. The state alleged that its health department was being denied access to inspect the facility, which has faced accusations of unsanitary conditions and mistreatment of detainees. The lawsuit, filed in Essex County Superior Court, sought a judge’s order to compel immediate entry for a full inspection.
This incident is not isolated. Fatalities in ICE custody have been on the rise, drawing national attention to the conditions inside detention facilities. A separate California ICE facility was found to have failed court-ordered medical care standards, further highlighting systemic issues.
Local officials have long raised alarms about Delaney Hall, which has been the subject of multiple complaints regarding health and safety. The GEO Group has previously denied wrongdoing, but the latest death adds pressure on state and federal authorities to intervene.
Governor Sherrill’s office has not yet detailed specific steps beyond coordinating with federal lawmakers, but the case is expected to fuel renewed calls for greater transparency in immigration detention. As the investigation into Lopez-Cornejo’s death continues, advocates are demanding immediate reforms to prevent further tragedies.
