Federal authorities have thwarted an alleged terrorist plot targeting one of the nation's busiest shopping centers, the Mall of America in Minneapolis. The FBI arrested 18-year-old Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud on Tuesday, following a nearly two-year undercover operation that culminated in his purchase of an AK-47 rifle and 200 rounds of ammunition from an undercover FBI employee posing as an ISIS facilitator.

According to a federal complaint unsealed by U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen, Mohamud had been in contact with a confidential informant and an undercover agent, repeatedly expressing his desire to carry out an attack to kill non-Muslims. The complaint details how Mohamud paid $600 for the weapons and had been sharing ISIS propaganda videos and pledging his allegiance to the terrorist group in text messages.

FBI disrupts ISIS-inspired plot targeting Mall of America
The FBI arrested an 18-year-old man for allegedly plotting an ISIS-inspired attack on Mall of America, following a nearly two-year undercover operation.

Attorney General Todd Blanche praised the operation on social media, stating, "Mohamud allegedly sent messages pledging his support to ISIS and propaganda videos to a confidential source." He added, "These threats are taken extremely seriously and we're grateful this attack was stopped in its tracks by federal law enforcement who work every day to keep our country safe."

FBI Director Kash Patel also lauded the arrest, writing on X, "This FBI is finding terrorists BEFORE they can attack Americans — and we will keep using every resource we have to dismantle their networks across this country. Outstanding work by @FBIMinneapolis. They likely saved lives."

The arrest occurred in a public park in Minnesota, where Mohamud had just taken possession of the rifle and ammunition. The investigation began after a tip from the community, leading to the undercover operation that tracked Mohamud's communications and movements.

Mohamud, a U.S. citizen, is expected to appear in federal court to face charges related to attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization. It remains unclear whether he has obtained legal counsel.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about domestic radicalization and the effectiveness of federal counterterrorism efforts. The FBI's Minneapolis field office has been particularly active in recent years, working with local law enforcement to monitor and disrupt potential threats. This operation is part of a broader strategy to identify and neutralize individuals inspired by extremist ideologies before they can strike.

Security at the Mall of America, which attracts millions of visitors annually, has been a focal point for law enforcement since previous plots were uncovered. The mall's management has not yet commented on the arrest, but the incident underscores the persistent threat landscape facing public venues.

This successful disruption also raises questions about the broader network of individuals who may be radicalized online. Federal authorities continue to urge the public to report suspicious activity, emphasizing that community engagement is crucial in preventing potential attacks. As the case moves through the legal system, more details are likely to emerge about the scope of Mohamud's plans and his connections, if any, to overseas operatives.

The swift action by the FBI has been widely praised by political leaders, who see it as a testament to the importance of vigilant counterterrorism operations. Meanwhile, the suspect remains in custody, and the investigation is ongoing.
