Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) has clinched a third term in the U.S. Senate, according to Decision Desk HQ. The Republican incumbent defeated Democratic challenger Hallie Shoffner, a sixth-generation farmer from the state, in a race that was largely anticipated to be a comfortable win for Cotton.
Despite the deep-red state's political landscape, a Hendrix College poll had raised eyebrows by showing Shoffner with a narrow lead. However, that outlier did not translate into an actual upset, as Cotton's campaign machine and fundraising advantage proved decisive. Cotton outspent Shoffner by millions of dollars, underscoring the financial disparity between the two campaigns.
Cotton, first elected to the Senate in 2015 after serving in the military, has risen to the No. 3 position among Senate Republicans. He currently chairs the Select Committee on Intelligence, a role that places him at the center of national security oversight.
Known for his hardline stance on illegal immigration and advocacy for tax cuts, Cotton has generally aligned with President Trump. However, their relationship hit a notable friction point during the campaign over the issue of permanent daylight saving time, which Trump has championed. Cotton publicly opposed the change, citing concerns about winter sunrises.
“No one likes changing the clock, me included, but Congress has enacted permanent Daylight Savings Time multiple times before and repealed it each time once Americans experienced absurdly late sunrises in the winter,” Cotton posted on social media. “Arkansans don’t want their kids going to school in the pitch dark, and I’ll always put Arkansas first.”
Cotton’s victory is part of a broader Republican success in Senate races this cycle, including Bill Hagerty’s win in Tennessee. Meanwhile, Democrats have seen some bright spots, such as Hakeem Jeffries securing reelection in Brooklyn with an eye on a historic speaker bid. In other state races, JB Pritzker won a third term in Illinois, boosting his 2028 prospects. Arkansas voters also weighed in on other key contests, including the governor’s race with Sarah Sanders seeking a second term.
Cotton’s win solidifies his position as a leading conservative voice in the Senate, with potential implications for future leadership battles. His focus on border security and fiscal policy is likely to remain central to his agenda in the coming term.
